Chili Cookoff
October in Elwood means one thing to many. Time for the annual Chili Cookoff. This year the weather was beautifully sunny with a slight breeze to keep the 21 entrants comfortable while awaiting the judges' decisions.
Coming in at third place was Dangerous Curves. With second place going to the elks, only first place was left. Taking the title of first was Delong Electric.
The Elwood Church of God swept the remaining three categories of: best dressed, hottest, and people's favorite.
Congratulations to everyone who entered. Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed this wonderful community event. Hopefully nobody suffers too big of a revenge from all of the chili beans.

Lowering the U.S. Flag in Observance of Fallen Firefighters / Fire Prevention Week Oct 5th - 11th
Lowering the U.S. Flag
Did you know that the law requires the U.S. flag be lowered in tribute on only a few days each year? Quite appropriately, one of these days is the observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.
On October 16, 2001, President George W. Bush approved legislation requiring the U.S. flag to be lowered to half-staff on all Federal buildings to memorialize fallen firefighters. Public Law 107-51 requires this action to occur annually in conjunction with observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.
Let your local media know that U.S. flags across the country will be lowered on Sunday, October 5, 2008. This includes the U.S. Capitol and the White House, as well as buildings in your local community.
Remember to lower the U.S. flags at your home, fire department, and business. Encourage your local community to follow the Federal Government's example. When you lower your flag this year, you will recognize the brave men and women who died protecting their communities from natural and man made emergencies and disasters and those who carry on the proud tradition.
You may also want to ask your state and local officials to include lowering the flag in a proclamation recognizing the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
This event starts off Fire Prevention Week. Where Local Fire Depts all over the country visit schools and pass out information on fire safety. Please help by taking some time during one evening this week and go over a fire escape plan with your families. You can find information at the National Fire Protection Assn. website at http://www.nfpa.org/ . You can also contact your local fire dept for information. Public fire departments responded to 1,557,500 fires in the U.S. in 2007. Using the tips and tools from the NFPA will help reduce your chance of being one of the 2008 statistics.

UPDATE: The Guest Feature has new moderators --- PLEASE READ ---
UPDATE: I have a couple of the members that have offered to moderate and approve the comments so I won't have to anymore which will leave me more time to devote to other things now. Thanks to the members for helping out. Do we have any junior reporters out there that would like to write some local news from time to time for the site? I ask because a lot of members want more news but with my job and other duties on the site, I don't have enough time to go get much news :) but I could make a new content type called community or citizen news where the members tell a news story once in a while. Its an interesting concept it would just depend on if people got involved. If interested just let me know in the comments below. Thanks
ORIGINAL STORY:
I have disabled the Guest feature as I have become too busy to sit and read all the guest posts everyday. Sorry for any convenience but membership is free and the posts go right through. If anyone else has time to moderate the guest posts let me know and I will turn them back on.
Also I am looking for some volunteers to help me with the site. Wouldn't require much time. For the last 3 years I and sometimes KPaul have pretty much done everything from covering events and news whenever I can to keeping everything updated and running and trying to keep up with all the guest comments every day. My work is suffering because of all the phone calls or people stopping in wanting to talk about or wanting me to post something on the website. Its taking forever to get anything done these days. Jason Brizendine Stopped in to tell me his side of whats being said on this site and hes not happy to say the least. Some people on here think hes writing a lot of the posts on here but he sure didn't seem to know how to find anything on the site very easily. Don't really mean much just an observation. I just figure if someone is posting to this site then they should know how to get around in it better. He really didn't seem to know much about it. He said one of the dispatchers showed it to him and he didn't know where to pull it up but the information the dispatcher showed him was wrong.
I put up a poll just to see what people thought and the next day the Mayor's office called and asked me to let people know they were still taking applications and had not interviewed anyone yet because people who did not have computers were calling the Mayor's office and voting for who they wanted chief. The Mayors Secretary was not amused.
People need to realize is that this website is owned by me, not the city government. I built it for the community to spread the word about whatever and keep each other informed so please whenever I post a poll, its for online use only. Thanks.
The Elwoodindiana.org Community will continue to grow but I can't really keep doing everything myself and because the sites free I can't hire anyone either so any help would be appreciated. Just use the sites contact form if interested. Thanks

Another Police Officer Suspended
Newly hired Police officer, Jason Roberts, sworn in on Aug. 29, 08 was immediately suspended without pay and will not continue as a member of the department. He was recommended at the July Board of Public Works and Safety meeting. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department had an encounter with Roberts four to five weeks prior. Roberts allegedly ran from police and then tested .07 for alcohol, .01 below the legal limit. Roberts had served nine years in law enforcement and came highly recommended by Delaware County officials. He was employed as a correctional officer at the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department and was a former reserve officer for Daleville.
