Only 10 Months and A Lot Accomplished

It is 10 months since President Obama stepped into office as U.S. President, promising to bring a change from the previous administration. I have heard some pundits arguing that in the past 10 months little if anything at all has changed. So, with the help of Washington Post columnist, Eugene Robinson, I thought I might take a look at what has accomplished in less than 300 days.
The most important accomplishment of the Obama Administration has been to save the American economy from a total collapse. We went to the brink of a new great depression, but now the economy in on the mend. We’re not completely back yes, but take note of a 3.5 percent economic growth in the third quarter, this growth following over a year of economic shrinking. One problem is that unemployment is much too high and still may not have peaked. However, the rate of new job losses has decreased steadily for the last several months and is seems clear now that jobs will start to come back next year.
Another problem is America’s growing deficit. We recently learned that the deficit has reached the dumbfounding figure of $12 trillion. Without doubt the deficit must be brought under control and reduced, but, most economists will tell you that bringing the economy back from the brink was the first priority. If the economy was allowed to fall over the brink, there would be no way of reducing the deficit. Now, as the economy starts to grow, we should begin to slow and even reverse the growth of our deficit.
Although, economic concerns have occupied most of the President’s efforts, there have been other accomplishments. Obama took steps to absolutely renounce the use of torture as a means of interrogation. Doing this has begun to rehabilitate America’s national honor, which was shredded by the practices of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. He also ordered the close the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison, which was (and still is) another stain on American national honor.
Obama obtained the conformation of the first Hispanic to the U.S. Supreme Court and made a trip to Egypt in order to speak directly to the Muslim world, telling them that America’s foreign policy would change from conflict to multilateralism and cooperation. Obama has taken steps toward investment in “green” jobs and education reform.
Now we come to health-care reform. I, personally, hoped that Obama would have exerted a bit more forceful leadership in pushing this reform. Nevertheless, we are now at the brink of erasing a 100 year blot on the American system. President Theodore Roosevelt first brought up the idea of universal health care for Americas, in 1909. In 2009, under the leadership of President Obama we will finally make that promise come true. There may be a public option or there may not be one, but either way the principle that every American in entitled to adequate health care is about to become law.
The one thing that most of us who supported Obama did not see coming was the degree to which many Republicans would go to obstruct the Obama agenda. Surely, as the loyal opposition, we would expect Republicans to raise objections and try to push changes in areas they feel are important, but the extent to which many Republicans were willing to go in order to kill every change the Obama Administration tried to bring about was far beyond anything most of us anticipated.
Now there is still a lot of work to do and a lot of opposition to overcome, but it is time to give credit where credit is due. Obama has accomplished a great deal in only 10 months.

And lets not forget that he has grown government as well. We now have the government in charge of the banking system, (bank Zsar) the Automotive sector, ( Car Zsar) now they want to control health care as well. I agree changes needed to be made but it scares me to think the government is calling the shots. To much power and the average citizen loses to much freedom.
And what does that say about all those who fought and died for our freedom? Seems like a slap in their face to hand the freedom over.
I agree Obama has done a lot. Some good, some not so good. The health care reform should not be shoved through fast. This is a change that can never be taken back. Lets make sure whatever they come up with is completely, 100% right. I also think we the people, should have a vote on the new health care plan before anything changes. This is a huge change and I want a real say in it.
Hello ballguy... Thanks for the comment. Well the government is growing under Obama. It seems a necessary evil if we are going to do what I believe needs to be done. I'm not a fan of extra large government, but I guess the more you want your government to do the larger is needs to be. Health-care reform, in my view, is necessary.
Hello bfeed, thanks for the comment. We agree that Obama has done some good and some not so good things. Health care is one of the good things, but nothing can ever be 100 percent right. Hopefully, health-care reform will be in improvement. I believe it will be, but it will not be 100 percent perfect. Nothing can ever be that good.
It would be better and more politic for Obama to start slow with the health care issue and tweak it if/when the funds become more available and the government shows an ability to handle this program better than it does Medicare and Medicaid. How likely is that? Not very, I'd guess. Way too rational.

Hi Bard ... thanks for the comment. Yes some argue that Obama is trying to do too much too fast. However, I wonder just how much longer we should wait for health-care reform. It was first proposed in 1909 by Teddy Roosevelt. So this is the end game of full century effort. I think it is time we actually did something. Nevertheless, the point you make has some merit, in my view.
How about the promise of creating 2-1/2 million jobs? With cap and trade and this health care package they are touting I see even more companies laying off!! I know people who have small businesses now who say if they are forced to insure their workers they will have no choice but to lay them off and maybe even lose their company's all together. I haven't been impressed with his first 10 months at all. He is a great speaker, but it takes more than that to run the country.
One big missing piece is the push for energy independence.
What happened to that and the Green Revolution, which was supposed to create jobs? Both Michigan and Indiana are amongst the states trying to develop a new industrial base around this, yet I've heard nothing about it from Congress or the Prez in many months.
The health care issue should have been tackled AFTER these two items were more securely established. That would have provided more jobs and thus a more positive emotional and economic climate in which to address health care.
