Roller Skating

Roller Skating:

When I was younger, I loved roller-skating, I could “shoot the duck”, do the “hop, hop, hop”, the hokey pokey, skate backwards, and pretty much whatever else I tried, but I was young. So this past weekend we went with the youth from church to skate, well, I fell once, got up, thought I can do this, did pretty well until they said “last skate”, I had almost made it around to get done, thinking “I am really proud of myself” well that is when I fell for the last time, when I went down I heard something in my knee tear, I was in so much pain, the kids from church all gathered round to see if I was ok, when they realized I was not, one went and got my husband (who had chosen not to skate), and one took my skates off of me. When my husband got to me, he asked what happened, I said it was my knee but was not positive, so he and another member from church helped me to a seat, my husband put my shoes on me, and helped me to the church van. I was so unstable, and in so much pain, I kept telling myself “don’t cry in front of the kids anymore” so I tried really hard to keep it in, as soon as the door shut for the last child, I explained to my husband that it was like walking on a piece of cooked spaghetti.

After being immobilized for four days I know what I tore, it was my MCL and my ACL; I am not sure where all of this will lead, but probably looking at surgery, lucky me! Anyway, I have never been known for being graceful, or coordinated, but never did I picture myself like this. I hate not being able to go when I want, or making a grocery list for my husband, not being able to do the simple things I like doing like laundry!

I am very lucky to have such a wonderful husband, he has been so great to me, but he has gone above and beyond to help me.

Anyone that might have a miracle cure for my knee, please let me know, I really hate the thought of surgery!

Hate to say it but sounds like surgery to me.  Hope they have given you some decent pain pills and make sure you get your happy pill soon as you get to the hospital if you do have to have surgery.  If thwere is anything you need , you have my number so call me.  Take care.

Maybe on the bright side you may get to meet some cute athletes at one of the sports medicine centers.

I did have an interesting experience when I took a friend to a Sports Med Center in Indy for some surgery on her leg. After he went over what the procedure was going to be etc. he prayed over her. Gotta love that.

Good wishes

This might be a good time to start!

Spark up a big "fatty".  It probably won't fix your knee, but hey, you won't care .

J4F,

My offer is a standing one, so just remember if you need anything don't hesitate to pick up the phone & ask, I know first hand just how much it sucks to be stuck on the injured bench.

Thanks for the offer, I will keep that in mind, I am not one that likes sitting at home, I like to go all of the time.

J4F, sorry to hear you have torn you MCL & ACL... 25 years ago I ripped my knee out at work, I did a Hyper extension, Luckily i was taken to Sports Medicine, & Dr. Rettic was on call the same one that worked on the Colts players..

They went in to clean it up, had to drill a couple holes through my Femur bone and  Tibia bone, detach some ligament, pull it through the drilled holes and attach it with stainless steel screws.. Back then I was in the Hospital for 3 days after my Surgery..Down a few more day at home.. then walking 5-6 days later with crutches..

Now days a friend had the same thing, they went home that day.. was walking with (meds), and crutches a day or so later... My how it has changed...

Believe me when I say I know your pain, my leg did bend backward as an Ostrich leg does.. I turned almost White, and the pain is unbelievable.. 25 years later and I still baby that leg most times...

After your Surgery, whether they just clean the cartilage up, or do a full rebuild, do not let them push you..... you will tear what you had repaired & it will take much longer to recoup... work at your pace to gain full range of motion..

You will know your limits, no matter what they say you need to accomplish...

PS.. Look on the bright side.. you will now have a neat built in weather alert monitor.. that knee will let you know of up coming weather changes..

It is not length of life, but depth of life.
