Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Every so often, an issue comes along that really defines the difference in political philosophies. Government administered health care is one of those issues. Congress will be discussing several different options in the next couple of months. Some of those options will require participation by people that don't want to participate. All of the options will require forced contributions by people, whether they participate or not. A lot of Republicans will rightfully condemn the program as socialistic, and then eventually support it the same way they support Social Security and Medicare.

That's where the difference in political philosophies comes in. In a Libertarian application, people who wished to take part in a government administered health care program would be free to do so. People who wished to take part in a privately run program that suited their needs better could make that choice, and people who choose to self-insure would be free to do so. They wouldn't be forced to pay for a system they didn't want.

It points out one of the simplest distinctions between Libertarian thought and the others. A Libertarian government would freely allow the existence of a voluntary socialist community. A socialist government cannot allow the existence of a Libertarian community.

There's a reason for that.

In a free society the state does not administer the affairs of men. It administers justice among men who conduct their own affairs....Walter Lippman
