Journalism Hope Blog Post
Cool. I will have to read it. BTW, I like your Obi-Wan get-up, kpaul. You got a light-sabre under that thing?

two of them!
both out of batteries, though, unfortunately. ;)
Thanks for reading. Would love to have your thoughts.
TESTING NO LOSS OF POINTS
Yep, you are right that observing a thing changes it, but the dynamic here is even more complicated because the 'observed' have been made aware of the observation, and some of them have some high computer literacy. That amps up the dynamics even more.
Comment: given your current experience, do you think it might be an good experiment to troll for forum participants at one of the other FPs?

Also, I'm glad you've changed the forum format. I'm not one of the veterans, but I initially found this forum format cumbersome. I like what you've done to make the transition easier.

Ok, you lost me. Heh.
You're asking if we should troll for users at Muncie Free Press?
Or whether I would mind if the HB trolled for users here or at MFP?
Oh, as the for TIOs:
One thing I noticed on the HB is that threads morph. It depends on the mix of people participating at the time. Something can start out innocently like "prayer thread" and it can change into a smackdown within a couple of posts.
To really moderate it, you'd have to have a fulltime person with total omniscience, vested with total control. If you scan some of the more popular threads on HB, you'll see all kinds of stuff written and posted. It's tough to moderate - to a certain extent it's 'viewer discretion advised'.
That said, I think it's better than MySpace on the whole.
"There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so."

i was thinking about that earlier. on the HB forums there's just one main topic (anderson) and lots of threads all thrown together. and within those threads, the discussions are all over the place.
i like the idea of just saying the whole forums sections are a less moderated section of the site. still moderate to an extent, but not harshly (or hypocritically...)
that way, the rest of the site stays the same (news and blogs and photos, etc.) with looser rules here in the forums with a warning on the front page of the forums for new people who might stumble by...

Not whether we should. As an experiment to report on your blog, what would happen IF you posted for users in a forum hosted by, say, a Muncie print medium.
Example: you posting an invitation on several of the HB threads. What I've had happen in Yahoo groups is that people are offered personal invitations to a particular group. I posted on a certain group and was surprised to find an invitation in my yahoo mailbox to join a different group as well. I actually liked it even better.
But of course this brings up ethics questions: is it okay to do that? What would you feel about someone doing that in your forums, etc.

In the interest of transparency, just wanted to let you guys know I wrote something up about all of you showing up here at my J-Hope blog titled, Football, Risk and Grassroots Journalism Hope. (Don't worry, no begging for money in this one. ;)
What we're doing here in East Central Indiana is important and interesting, and I think other people are going to enjoy hearing about Operation Mass Exodus (that's just beginning...)
Anyway, like I said, just wanted to let you know about the post because it mentions AFP and you, the community here. Won't bug you with everything I write over there, but feel free to follow my journey with grassroots journalism publishing in the 21st century.
