That's only fair. I would like to see their ideas as well. Now that being said, I think the intent of Tobi's thread was to get some ideas to help the board out. I am glad she is at least asking for help. I may be naive but I think of any of the board members, she may listen. The others, I have no confidence in. The people of Anderson will have to answer that problem. Back on topic though, I am looking for ideas. I asked the other day that if Anderson went to 1 high school, 1 middle school and 3 large and over crowded grades school would that do it? The answer I got was no. What is left? If that won't do it, then I vote for 2 high schools grades 7-12, 2 middle schools and how ever many grade schools it takes to handle the grade school population. Some way some how the people of Anderson are going to have to step up and do more if they want to keep their schools.
I'm not an educational expert.....I'm a parent...and I am trying to get the word out there that parents need to be involved. I am with a group that wants to bridge the gap between the administration/board/teachers and the community. I would have no patience with anyone that ONLY presents a negative attitude towards the whole concept.
I have to admit that I don't go to the board meetings. Never have, never will. I am usually working 2nd shift and the kids are very busy. When there is quite time at home I wouldn't go to a board meeting. I do try to keep up on things via the paper, here at AFP and thru people I know that are informed. I do have a stake in what happens as I do pay taxes and my kids go to ACS. I do think that going to 1 high school would be a terrible mistake. As the statistics are showing the graduation rates are dropping and the free lunch %'s are getting high. Has anyone thought about the students who are leaving ACS? I bet they paid for their lunches. The students that come back, some because they can not get special classes out side of ACS but a lot are because they can't or won't follow the rules at their new school.
I doubt very much if how the school board or acs is acting effects whether a parent shows up or not for the special night at their school. What would make them show up for a school board meeting (that has very small attendance) if they thought the school they attended was going to close. It does seem to get people out to those meetings.
As you seem to keep harping on the Bohnenkamp issue, I asked my family if they even knew who she was.....guess what they did know she was the past president but nothing about any of the things you keep going on and on about. So out of the ten or so people I asked about attending back to school night the answer is NO it didn't effect whether they attend . They go for their children and to meet the teachers.
So they attend not knowing anything about Bohnenkamp. Does that really make any sense to you? The attendance is meager at best (a handfull of people one of which is usually me) but the people you polled all go but don't know who the president of the board is?
If you read my post sir...or madamn....I said past president. Bohnenmkamp is the past president...
And we all know who the President is as he has taught and coached many of them when they were in school. So who do you think the president of the school board is at the moment?
As for attending I was talking about the open house at the schools....twist away........

Rusty, he probably was. I know that he was PE and coach for many years, Health usually falls into that category. (I don't usually remind them that they were teaching before I was born...it tends to make them feel old....lol)
To all the helpful posters of AFP, thank you for your opinions. I am listening and taking notes. Moreover, there are more people than you know that read these threads. I hear about it all the time. You may be surprised who is reading what you are posting.
I know that ACS is not what is should be, not what I wish it was, and not what I KNOW it can be. However, that isn't to say that everything is bad. There are many bright spots out there. I wish that I had a better relationship with the newspaper editor at AHS so that we could work together and get those stories to the HB or some other source. HHS seems to do a great job of getting their good news to the newspaper, AHS should follow their lead. I think that the discrepancy between schools is sometimes our own fault.
It was mentioned by someone somewhere earlier to just blow the whole thing up and start over...I almost agree, but there are programs that are very salvageable. With the financial storm we are facing, I would love to get everyone on board with the explosion and re-birth process. (By everyone, I mean staff, students, parents, grandparents, taxpayers, interested observers, the city, the county, other school systems in the county [many of them are facing the same issues to a lesser degree], even our state senator and congressmen(women))
I know that I am delusional, and that all these groups will not work together, but I am hopeful and have some meetings set up to see if I can get some balls rolling.
So you can say the problem with the school system is because of uneducated parents and the free lunch program but we cannot show evidence that this is not true and you will not listen or discuss it. WOW.... nice communication with the community. Your way or no way?
It's about being civil and respectful to thread starters. That's how I'm seeing it anyway. I've been working too many hours, though. ;)
Ok, someone, please save this thread and get it back on topic. all over communication ABOUT it should be elsewhere. Thanks.
Who was being un-civil or dis-respectful?
She made a claim about uneducated/poor parents being a big reason for the graduation rate and that claim was re-butted by figures from muncie schools, who have more kids on free lunch than ACS and they have around a 30% higher graduation rate.
I guess if we dont agree with what certain people post we aren't allowed to post in the thread at all or we are "thread jacking".
Read in the paper that some are thinking about shortening the school day while others want to extend it along with the school year. Any talk of that here?
