The prisoner wishes to say a word.............Freedom!!!!!!!
Whoops. I see KPaul put this under the Story thread earlier
The prisoner wishes to say a word.............Freedom!!!!!!!
Is the new law in effect for shooting a pregnant woman? I hope she and the baby are ok, plus the other girl, so young. The newspaper says that a young man was also shot.
Sounds like a jealous ex-boyfriend, doesn't it?

Not sure but I think that law went into effect last year.
I know I heard on the scanner last night that the pregnant woman identified the shooter. I have not yet read the Herald's report but I'm sure they know who they are looking for
In a report dated April 24, 2009, Medical News Today says:
The Indiana Senate on Tuesday voted 44-2 to give final approval to a bill (S.B. 236) that would increase prison sentences from the current two to eight years by an additional six to 20 years for individuals convicted of murder or attempted murder of a pregnant woman that causes the death of the fetus, the AP/Herald Bulletin reports.
The bill also would expand prison sentences under a current state law that allows prosecutors to file murder charges in cases in which a fetus dies if the woman is at least seven months pregnant. The feticide law applies to fetuses that are not viable outside the womb. Supporters of the bill say sentences under the current feticide law are too lenient. According to the AP/Bulletin, lawmakers said they decided to increase the sentences under the current laws, rather than expand the feticide law to cover all stages of pregnancy, to avoid a debate over when life begins. The bill now goes to Gov. Mitch Daniels (R), who can veto the measure, sign it into law or let it become law without his signature, the AP/Bulletin reports (Martin, AP/Herald Bulletin, 4/21)
I thought this was a law already, but sounds like it depends on whether Mitch has bothered to sign it yet.

Go figure, maybe Mitch is too busy telling new companies that they need to see if the grass is greener in other states before making a committment here, oops I was not supposed to say that!
I hope that the baby and mommy are both fine, maybe one of the news stations will pick up the story and fill in the blanks that the HB leaves.
Here's the updated story...

Lets not bash Mitch. The law will become effective July 1, 2009 and offense must be commited after June 30, 2009 so, the girl's assaillant would not qualify for additional sentence for that offense.
