WASHINGTON (June 29) -- The Supreme Court ruled Monday that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge.
New Haven was wrong to scrap a promotion exam because no African-Americans and only two Hispanic firefighters were likely to be made lieutenants or captains based on the results, the court said Monday in a 5-4 decision. The city said that it had acted to avoid a lawsuit from minorities.

Maybe the minority firefighters who did not score high enough, should have studied a little harder for the test?

Or is personal responsibility racist?

Why study harder when you can use the race card? Obamas pick for the high court has no buisness on the high court and neither does anyone that voted to throw out the results of the ones that passed the test IMO. Let the minorities take it again, sure. But what if they fail again? Pass them automatically so they don't sue for discrimination?

That only gives the white guys a case for reverse discrimination.  So is the answer just to forget about merit pay and advancement based on objective testing?

Ditto on the last few.  I am glad this went that way.  I am 49 yr old and a white male.  If I was black or female I would now be making 20 to 30K more a year.  No offense intended,  this is just my life.  I would not change much.

Have a nice day.

Either there is equality across the board or there isn't.  Affirmative action is another name for reverse discrimination.

Purdue used to let a certain quota of black underachievers in, but it wouldn't lower the standards for them.  If they didn't make the grade at the end of the year, they were gone.  If Purdue didn't have the same standards across the board, then it would be failing as an institution for higher learning and even worse, it would be failing the affirmative action students, imo.

Amen, Bard.  I have seen letters of denial sent to white job applicants that unashamedly stated that the recipients of the letters were well-qualified for the positions for which they applied but Affirmative Action required the 'selection of another candidate' in order to be 'compliant' with federal regulations related to 'quotas' and 'minority hiring'.  Racism is racism.  Discrimination is discrimination.  No words can mitigate the unjust effects of these patently immoral mindsets.

That's sort of hypocritical of you then isn't it Bard?

I mean "hate speech" is "hate speech" regardless of what group is targeted with that hate speech then right?

Affirmative action is wrong IMO. No one should be given special treatment.
