Last night while watering the flowers, I was approached by a couple handing out fliers. They urged me to notify my local council person and urge them to vote no for the proposed $140.00/year increase in city charges for trash pick up.

They even listed the e-mail and phone number for every member of the council.

I assured them I would, then shoved the paper in my pocket. Later, after I had completed my chores, I removed the flier from my pocket and read through it. It outlined the fact that the city council is meeting on the 9th for the third time to vote on this proposal, and how it was going to cost each one of us $140.00 more a year to maintain the level of service we now receive. . . Then I got the the real reason they were distributing the fliers.

At the bottom was a section that read "The real reasons The City of Anderson is in financial trouble". Beneath that header were three bullet points, each of them starting with "Mayor Ockerman" . . .

They lost me. . .   More sour grapes or an actual problem?

I haven't seen the flyer in question & this is the first time I am hearing about the city raising trash pickup fee's, but if it's true that my trash collection fee's are going to rise 140 bucks a year I'm not going to be very happy about it.

Well, it is true. Apparently the city council is voting on including a "trash collection" line item fee on your monthly utility bill. There is an article about it in the HB this morning, which I saw after posting this topic.

I certainly am not going to be thrilled over it to say the least!

Also, within the article it quotes the City of Anderson as "wanting to obtain federal stimulus funding to take trash collection "in house"", in other words they are talking about purchasing trash trucks and hiring the crews to man them. . .

Hummm. . . I could have built in Carmel/Fishers but chose to stay in Anderson and build. . . Why was that again?

Slowly they chip away at the list of reasons that validated my choice. . .

Well thanks for the heads up Palehorse!

Does the flyer have contact info for the folks passing out the flyers? I'm willing to volunteer a little of my time to help get the word out about this & I think if enough folks protest it they might reconsider it.

This was in the paper over a month ago and I believe someplace long past Salmon Fan even talked about it happening.  So this is not new  news ..... Thank you for posting it again.

Sorry, don't have the flier with me at the moment, but the article lists the only info on the flier surrounding who is generating them.

It does have a nice list of council members and their e-mail and phone numbers though! (The flier I mean, not the article).

They are voting tomorrow, so time is short. (Time, date, location listed at the end of the article). They've already voted twice on it and this is the third and final vote. I also had heard nothing about this until they delivered that flier to me last night. (Kind of makes me angry and suspicious of them).

I understand the whole falling revenue stream due to the loss of jobs, housing, etc., but unless they want to increase the flight of residents, they're going to have to get out the axe and chopping block very soon, as Muncie is doing. . .

Residents of this city are already struggling just to keep a roof over their heads, and increasing "fees" are not going to help one bit. . .
