Does anyone know what happened to the Whitsels. Didn't the kids want to take over the doughnut shop when their parents retired? They were our neighbors and the doughnuts were the best! Those kids got on the bus for school and smelled as good as the store.

John, the old Norton Brewery sat on the east side of Central, between 7th & the jail at 8th St.    The buildings across the street on the west side of Central had been the stables for the Brewery.    The City later had the garage & some other offices in them.   On the N-W corner of 8th & Central was the Utility office.    The feed store was on the N-E corner of 9th & Central and I think the building filled that whole block up to 8th St.

The old #1 Fire Station was on the S-W corner of 8th & Central.    That building was also a former City Hall.    City Hall was located in several buildings before it finally moved to it's present location.    If you remember, when they tore down the old City Hall where the present one is now located, the City offices moved to the old Hunter Chevrolet building at 6th & Meridian Sts.

Thanks Z. (I haven't been on in awhile - been spending waay too much time on travel and cruise forums - so this is a way late response) I remember the feed store because we live on the farm where Killbuck Park now is, and that was where Dad got his farm supplies. We got our tractors and farm implement stuff at John Deere, which, if I remember, was on 8th, just a few steps from Fletcher.

I don't remember the fire station you reference.  I do remember the stop light at 8th and Central.  I believe that was where they put the first left-hand turn lane only in Anderson.  I remember how many wrecks and almost-wrecks I saw there when people in the turn lane would continue going straight up the hill.

For the life of me I'm drawing a complete blank on what was at the corner of 8th and Central.  I know, in later years, they put some government offices and Social [In]Security offices there. I do remember that when they close the old bus station on Main St, Greyhound moved into the old service station at 10th (I think) and Central.

Here's a question which I recently thought of: Does anyone know anything about the family of your representative, Tim Lanane?  Years and years ago, when we first moved to Anderson (1943 or 44 I believe) we lived on Valley Grove Road across the road from a farm owned by a Lanane (Rex or Jim, I believe but am not sure).  I remember that they had a boy about my age.  Surely this isn't the same Lanane, is it? Anyone know anything about Tim's history? It'd just satify my curiosity.

I would think Tim Lanane would be in his fifties, he has been practicing law since the mid to late 70's. I think that is younger than you John Galt, sorry.

It might be Denny Lanane, he is older (sorry) and is with Triad-a service for older folks. He writes or did do a column in the HB.

Thanks for the responses. The name "Denny Lanane" kinda of rings a bell, but it's pretty faint.

No offense with the reference to age.  I still have my health, my ability to think and reason, and every morning I've woken up this week I've been on this side of the dirt.  That's a lot more than I can say for a number of folks much younger than I. If the worst thing that happens to me is someone making a remark about my 68 years of longevity, then I'm waaaay ahead of the game.  As far as I'm concerned, I'm just "Livin' the dream!"

John, that is far from old! I enjoy reading this thread, especially when you guys start talking about where this or that was, my parents grew up in Anderson, and they have told me a lot of things, and some of what you guys have said are just reminders of things they have talked about.

My aunt (she is close to your age) remembers getting a shake (or malt) and fries from some place that used to be close to where the parking garage is, do you recall some place that might have been in that area where you could get those items?
