Do you remember all the little grocery stores? Maiers Market at Nichol & Arrow along with Roselyn bakery on the opposite corner. Hoosier Market at 38th & Main. All the shops in the Edgewood Shopping Center, Guarnatee Auto, Standards Supermarket, Dugar's Beauty Shop, Citizens Bank, some type of Hallmark store, Hooks Drugs, Woolworths, Grants and a couple of shoe stores and Citizens Bank. I grew up on west side of Anderson. The library branch was where the Village Corner beauty shop is now by LoBills on Nichol. There used to be a Putt-Putt there also. We used to walk to the Confectionary on Arrow Avenue and then hit up Lemon's Market and the Pepsi plant on 18th street before us kids in the neighborhood got into trouble for straying too far from home. Another favorite place was the woods on Raible by the post office too.
If I recall Hoosier Mkt was at 7th/Jackson. That was the onl;uy place My Mother would buy meat. Was not there also a Cooks at 8th/Madison?
Hoosier Mkt was at 7th & Jackson. A&P was at 14th & Jackson.
I must be getting really old . I remember an Art's Varsity Pizza on 23rd street west of Columbus . I think there is a Mexican Grocery store there now .
Remember all of the bars in the downtown area ? The Stables , Foxes Surf Lounge (later Dagger Deenie) , etc . If we had them all back downtown Anderson would be thriving again .
Trade Winds, Alpine Bar, Boat Club, Saratoga, Derby, Tunnel Bar, Anderson Hotel Bar & several others.
When I was a kid my family would meet at my Grandparent's house to eat dinner . Sometimes my Grandma would prepare a meal but my favorite memory was when we would order food from a small restaurant on Columbus Ave. called the White Spot . It was just north of Rinker's Hardware near 23rd and Columbus .You could get eight hamburgers for a dollar or six tenderloins for a dollar and my Grandpa and I would always go pick them up . Spending time with Grandpa was always special to me .
I remember The White Spot. If memory serves it was on Columbus back up around Nicholson File and Delco, (Plant 1?). Wasn't it a place where a lot of Delco workers went on their lunch breaks? Or, am I thinking of a little bar which was across the street from Plant 1?
Another thing I miss about Anderson are the breaded tenderloins you mentioned. There was/is a bar on Broadway near Cross St (Red Abel's?) which served gargantuan breaded tenderloins.
Forgive me if some of my references are a bit off. I have this habit of suffering "Senior citizen moments" quite a bit lately.
It was Milo's Bar before Able bought it. Milo played for the Anderson Packers semi-pro basketball team owned by the guy who owned Emge's. Forget his name. He also owned the Central Indiana Railroad.
The old Coopers Bowling Alley on 53rd then went to Star Skate & now HHGregg.Charlie Cooper passed away a couple of years & one son (Bobby) passed away earlier this year.
Speaking of bowling alleys, you also had Rain's, out on Hartman Rd and highway 9. That was my first paying job, as a pin boy. There was also Brown's on Broadway, between the dairy and the old interurban barns, and Murnan's, downdown on Main St. Murnan's burnt down around 1955 or so.
Also the one on 29th,I forgot the name but the building is still there.

The one on 29th St. was the Olympia Bowling alley. There was also one in the 800 blk Jackson St. on the west side, about where T&J Tire is at.
I remember that but what about Guinn's Drug Store on the other corner of Broadway and Vineyard where they also had a soda fountain. I am sure you are too young for that.
I may be wrong, but I believe Gwinn's Drugs was next to Wilson's Grocery in the old Meridian Building at Broadway and Cross. The drug store at Vinyard (no "e") and Broadway was the North Anderson Pharmacy (I think). Dr. Charlie Armington had an office in the same building. The door was on the north side toward the rear. Vinyard Street was named after the Vinyard family who owned property west of Broadway. One of the daughter's names was Sarah Vinyard.
Previous to the Flashback, the building was occupied by American Legion Post #127. Prior to that, one of the Anderson Newspapers was printed there, Bulletin I believe.
Bill & Sam Bursick (sp?) bought the building and turned it into the Flashback. Bill had been plant manager of Philidelphia Quartz and Sam, his wife, is a nurse.
I grew up in Alexandria but I remember a place on Ohio Avenue across the street from Lee's video(of course it wasn't that back then) that had the BEST donuts ever. My dad used to go in there and get ubbers of day old donuts for practically nothing. Now if anyone remembers things about Alexandria....I can remember it like it was yesterday. I had such a great childhood growing up there. Wish it was like that now......oh what I wouldn't give to have the "Good Ole days" back again.
Growing up in Alex, you must have know the Meslam's (sp?) Dickie and Donny? Spend many a Friday and/or Saturday night at Skateland. After we left Killbuck we moved to Prosperity Rd (500N) about half way between Anderson and Alex. I knew several kids from Alex.
yes I know the Measlems.... I also hung out at the skating rink...loved it there. I learned to roller skate at about 3 years of age....my parents went with us...remember when George Smith played the organ and the thing came out of the ceiling...the organ ......the baby rink...and most of all the fox trot boogie and the congo thingy where you made a line and kicked your feet....good times.....

She was probably talking about the drugstore that was on the N-E corner of 11th and Meridian.

How long has Flashbacks been around?
What's the scoop on that place?
And The Toast?

Huh. That's very interesting that Flashback is in the old newspaper building, Z. Thanks. I knew the place had a good vibe. Heh.
