ok you guys....here's one for ya. For those who remember old buildings from way back. In August of 2007 I purchased a home that sits on the corner of 29th and Brown...kind of behind the old H&R Block and the fire station is almost in my back yard. I was told and have confirmed that it was built in 1890 and was a school until about 1918 when this part of town actually became part of Anderson....before then it was considered the country. In the 1920 census it is a home because I can find who lives here. What I would like to know and have confirmed is...... if this was once used as a beauty shop or barber shop. It is awfully big(4500 sq. feet) to have just been a beauty shop. It had an apartment upstairs when we bought it....we have opened it up to be one whole house again. My basement houses my garage and a lot more rooms. My daughter and her husband actually live down there. It has it's own entrance from the outside and everything. Just wondering if anyone remembers what it used to be back in the 40's or 50's or even 60's. I know in the 1930 census it was still being used as a residence and the man died here sometime in the late 30's. Cruzer even told me once that some member of the Ockoman family lived here at one time......go figure.

I think I know the house you are speaking of. Just south of 29th on the east side of Brown? I think I was in there several years ago. Anyway, either the deed or the abstract should give you the info you are looking for. They can be found at the Court House.
[ It was Milo's Bar before Able bought it. Milo played for the Anderson Packers semi-pro basketball team owned by the guy who owned Emge's. Forget his name. He also owned the Central Indiana Railroad.
Boy, you just jogged a memory I haven't had in awhile. I vaguely remember going to some Packer's games with my parents back in the late '40's or early 50's. They played at the old Wig Wam. Andersonm was actually in the NBA, before it got big. In fact Indiana had three NBA teams, Indianapolis ?, Fort Wayne Zolner Pistons (franchise got sold and became the Detroit Pistons) and the Anderson Packers. I think Anderson got to the final playoffs one year?
The Milo you reference is Milo Komavich (sp?). I remember him because he and another player came out to the farm we lived on to hunt rabbits a couple of times. The guy looked like giant to me! I think the other player who came with him was a Charly something-or-other?
Trade Winds, Alpine Bar, Boat Club, Saratoga, Derby, Tunnel Bar, Anderson Hotel Bar & several others.
Another Anderson landmark of adult beverage purveying was The Caboose.
We had this discussion before but I don't remember if it was ever answered...
What was the name of the bar on the corner of 10th (I think) and Main, beside Murnan's Bowling Alley? It was across the street from the old Anderson Bulletin offices. The bar burnt when the bowling alley went up in flames.

Milo's last name is close. I'm not sure how it's spelled either. I was just a kid when he played, but I remember he owned the bar. It had a family room and we'd go there to eat.
I don't know the name of the bar at 10th & Main. Downtown was loaded with bars.
Does anyone remember Miller's Grocery? It was small and near a park. I remember also Wenzel's Donut on St. Highway 67. It was the best with whipped cream filled donuts. Haven't ever tasted anything that good since.
Does anyone remember Dodds Grocery near 21st and Walnut or Jims Market at 21st and Jefferson .? The owner was a very nice man named Jim Freeman . Those small neighborhood grocery stores bring back a lot of fond memories . There was also one called Turner's Market at 38th and Madison where the flower shop is now .
Of Frisch's, Alibi (Jumbo) and the Pink Horse, I nominate the Pink Horse for the best double decker (the Dronburger). Don't think I ever had a double decker at the Rancho Grande. Frisch's had ultimate strawberry pie & onion rings. Frisch's was the best cruise spot. You always backed into the parking spot so you could check out who was driving through. Order a med. orange drink, pour half of it out, then fill it back up with Gilibey's(sp?) extra dry gin. Joe Cage....RIP
