Is there any plans on making the weed and seed program and the crime watch two different things? Weed and seed seems to be in with economic development and crime watch should be as it used to be under the police department.
As an after thought and follow up to the above question. who is paying for the trip to Portland OR this week for the group going on weed and seed seminar? Is it paid by weed and seed monies or are the taxpayers footing the bill?
How is this supposed to benefit the city of Anderson?
Just wanted to let everyone know the weather is going to play a big part in whether this gets done tomorrow or on another day. Hopefully soon, though. I'm excited about this idea.
Oh, and for the more technical questions, the city controller might be available for something similar... Although that might not play as well with video (lots of numbers, etc...)
Politically, you're right it would have made more sense to note the shortfall and include a plan of action to handle it. However, Mayor Ockomon didn't write the story and didn't have any control over how it was handled, politically.
The controller did call for $1 million in budgetary cuts, but I don't think there way any way for Mayor Ockomon to have had such a plan in place five days into his administration, which was when the story was published.
Eight weeks later, he probably has some plans roughed out. I know they planned to take $150,000 from the airport budget, according to an HB story published January 19. According to the story,
"Throughout the campaign, Ockomon voiced his opposition to a proposed replacement airport in southwest Madison County and vowed to support Anderson Municipal Airport.
“We weren’t really aware of the severity of the situation,” Ockomon said. “We’re in a financial crisis, and it was left by the previous administration.”
Other than that, I wonder where the cuts would be made, and revenue enhanced.
Again, regarding the question about these issues not being publicly addressed, I'm not sure you can confidently lay that at the Mayor's doorstep. Only the HB determines what they will publish and when. Then again, perhaps someone (like AFP?) can hunt down the information?
I'd leave the content of my questions the same. Politically, it is harmful to this mayor (or any mayor) to leave these questions unanswered this long, and I'm wondering why he hasn't addressed them as of yet.
(I acknowledge that the intent of the controller's announcement was that the shortfall was the result of the previous administration. However, this administration is now in charge and this kind of shortfall should tell him that urgency is required to ensure a balanced budget at year-end).
Where the budget is concerned, the Mayor cannot afford to be "hands-off" and rely on the controller alone.
If the HB or other media have access to information regarding corrective steps being taken with the budget that aren't being printed, the mayor should call a press conference and force the story.
Thanks for the info as I worked for the Mayor during campaign and hoped he would not blow you off. Sometimes you just think the most negative of what the reasons might be. Guess it is political not trust.

Jens: if I may make a few comments here:

This has been rescheduled to March 10... Stay tuned...
Mayor rescheduled (again)...
I'm glad they got with me before I drove all the way out there, though.
We're hoping Friday...
Kpaul, You don't think they are side stepping you do you? I know the mayor even though not well and hope that is not the case.
I don't get that impression at all.
From what I heard, a last minute business meeting came up, so hopefully it's something good for Anderson as a whole.

I am really gun shy this time around. :)
Guess I should've been more forthcoming with details as to why. ;)
