The "Trauma Team" is called out any time there's an injury to a child that is either serious or potentially suspicious (as in abuse). It's simply a multi-disciplinary 'notification' system to notify various agencies of the circumstances of certain types of cases involving children.

I hung out with police officers for many years when I was younger, as well as babysitting for several of their children, but I never learned that, thanks for that information, it will help me when I am listening to my scanner.

It's a relatively new concept. Kind of a "10 heads are better than 1" type of thing. The more agencies involved in a situation, even if it turns out to be completely innocent, the less likely abuse or neglect will slip through the cracks.
