Son told me the player was ineligible because of grades. Player had 2 F's in the last grading period last year. Schools let you play with 2 F's with a 7 period class schedule. This guy only took 6 periods and had 2 F's. Coaches did not know he only had 6 classes instead of 7. IMO 2 F's regardless should disqualify you no matter how many classes you take. He is a senior in my freshman son's geometry class and has a hard time keeping up with class work as he is watching from the wrong side of his eyelids.
I would love to continue discussion with the board of tightening the academic requirements to play. Currently we use the minimum ISHAA requirements, but I am told that if we wanted to require a C average we could.
That is what it was in the high school that I attended, one F would keep you off...dropping below your C average got you on the bench. I remember players and cheerleaders really stressing in some classes....
I also told my son that if any classes fell below a C (and if certain classes fell below a B) we would take him off the team. I realize that students who do not do well academicall may excel in other areas, but they need to do things to help themselves. I don't know if the team offers tutors, but this would be something to do to help those athletes that are struggling. I also think that athletes that are trying to do the work by using tutors or whatever should be considered in some way. I had a friend in high school that was LD and really struggled but she could sing beautifully. She took her education very seriously and tried to get all of the help she could, but it was really hard for her. They did not kick her out of choir but looked at all of the hard work she put into her studies. She was able to win a scholarship to college and is now a high school choir teacher.
I was told by my daughter who is friends with several football players that this time the Highland coaching staff was not at fault and was caught unaware of the situation. Who ever is in charge of the illegibility list made the mistake. The student was not made mention off so they had no clue. Also the student only had 5 classes instead of 6. He had 2!!! study halls.

PresidentJust a member of ACSC Board of TrusteesThey need some incentive to make better grades, too many kids are thinking they can skate through school.
