I was told by my daughter who is friends with several football players that this time the Highland coaching staff was not at fault and was caught unaware of the situation. Who ever is in charge of the illegibility list made the mistake. The student was not made mention off so they had no clue. Also the student only had 5 classes instead of 6. He had 2!!! study halls.
I hesitated before getting involved in this topic since my offspring have long since left the Anderson school system, but I must admit my curiosity has gotten the better of me. I can understand that perhaps the coach did not purposely make a mistake re: the student playing who wasn't eligible, but I have a question. Isn't it a regular procedure for ALL coaches to get reports of what classes EACH sports participant is signed up for AND (when tabulated) the grades for each student athlete? When I played HS sports back in the dark ages, the athletic director got ALL schedules and grades then went over them with each coach.
It would seem that the coach SHOULD have known (but may not have) AND whatever school official each coach reports to SHOULD have known. I'm not even going to ask about the policy of letting a student with even ONE "F" continue to participate in sports. THAT little nugget should be handled by officials FAR beyond (above) the coach's level.
Why do they call it "Common Sense" when so damn few people have it?
Problem is the over paid athletes in the pro game. Almost all the HS athletes think they are going to be rich and feel like classes are a waste.
OH - I absolutely understand that, but the administration should be running the show. If the coaches and administrators ALLOW this attitude to flourish, it's not the students (alone) that are at fault, it's also the adults. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the rules are concerning the grades and who checks to see if the athletes are doing what they are supposed to. I can't believe that NO-ONE has the responsibility to check grades and eligibility. I can agree that maybe the coach in this case made an honest mistake (?), but there has to be SOMEONE responsible.

The student made the 2 F's in the last grading period of the previous year. Those grades carry over to start out the next school year as far as extra curricular events go. Who ever was in charge of eligibility made the mistake. The list that was given to the coach was not correct and the student played before the coach knew anything was wrong.
Guess this is a learning mistake for everyone. Coach needs to get more involved, some coaches do. Hopefully this can be resolved and get this student some help. The bad thing is people tend to put all student athletes in the same basket. We have some really good kids at both schools, that work hard on grades and sports. My grandson plays at AHS and his best friend at HHS both great student athletes, so I have a little first hand knowledge.

Perhaps the most accurate comments made on this thread. Just for the record, I found the appropriate sections on the IHSAA website that govern responsibility in this area. The PRINCIPAL is responsible for maintaining a list of student athletes and their grades by EACH grading period. He/she is responsible to either elect a proxy or personally inform ALL administrators and athletes involved with athletic programs of the rules and necessary compliance. Lets hope that this IS used as a learning experience.

I agree that everyone involved should have looked more closely to make sure everyone was eligible. Perhaps they will in the future. However, it does make me wonder if other ineligible students have played in the past and how different their season would have gone.

Does anyone know WHO actually caught the violation in the first place?

Yes study hall is a class. Maybe those are the classes he got the F in. ;
LOL. I don't remember ever getting graded for study hall. But if I had.....I bet it would have been a C-. I was bad about passing notes. ;)
