Okay, this is the discussion, which is different than commenting on the blog. The rule for this thread is that if you want interaction on the subject, we can discuss here, if you have commentary on his blog entry, you post it there.

Seriously, though, does your computer not allow you to choose between wi-fi that's available where you are?

Okay, I'm laughing at your butt!!!

And seriously. The laptop picks up all availabe wifi in the area.  But since I have connected to all unsecured wifi's in the Panera area at one time or another, the system chooses which one to connect to automatically now.  I have to manually go in to the Connect To area and change it.  I'm not aware of which one it has connected to until after I have opened that Window. Something went hinky on my Network Location service and it won't start up, so I can't pass my mouse over my network icon in the system tray to see which service has connected.  As a rule, it's no big deal if there are certain sites I can't access. But when innocuous sites are being blocked, I am annoyed by it.  Bookofmatches.com is just such a site that doesn't need to be blocked.

CC, can you get this from the parking lot there? I want to go hunt down the different wifi spots if I ever get my laptop repaired. (And do you do any micro soldering work? :D The power jack needs replaced, and I don't trust the steadiness of my hands on that)

Heh. The Computer Dude is working on just that problem for someone today in the Elwood newsroom. ;)

I have a laptop that needs it done too...

He fixes quite a few of the power cords - some models anyway...

Hey Dawg....yes you can sit in the parking lot in front of the building and pick up several wifi signals, if I recall correctly, actually more than you can if you are inside.  My laptop has a dead battery, so I have to plug it in to use it.  But the other laptop I had (and plan on getting back this next week, is battery powered, and we've checked it out.)  Actually...you can drive down any street, really slow and...ping ping ping.....pick up any wireless within range.  Some are secure, some are not. It's those non-secure ones that can be fun. ;)

I don't do the soldering.  Maybe KP can hook you up, otherwise, there is this guy that hangs out at the Waffle House nearly every night...and I'm talking 3am in the morning, who does. He did mine.  An Inspiron 2650. It's been working great for several weeks now. It seems to be a common malady with the Dell laptops. Sucks too, I thought I could fix it, but after I got so far tearing my laptop down, there was a stupid metal plate in the way that I did NOT want to mess with. I was immensely happy when I found Nelson.  I can take you to meet him over the weekend if you have the availability and time. I need a reason to be out at 3am. ;) (That is if KP doesn't hook you up with his guy.)
