I am unemployed and have time to crack them all....so a paper bag or two full would be nice.

Never thought of that.  I am home all day most days and I could sit here and crack them.  I could bring a 13gal trash bags and pick them up from the pile if possible.  Love the darn things even though my favorite is hazelnuts.

I love them too but hate paying the price for them in the store. My favorite are black walnuts which are really not that easy to find. All the stores sell are the English walnuts which are good but I like the punch the black walnuts have. If I shell two pounds an hour I am saving quite a bit of money per hour! They keep pretty well in a freezer too.

I will add, if you have never processed large quantities of black walnuts there are a few things one should observe....

Once the husk starts to turn yellowish and you can mash a finger into it you have to get it off the nut...

A hammer works good but wear a long sleeve shirt that will become your annual nut processing shirt cause it will soon be black. lightly smack the husk with the hammer until it comes off. If it isn't yet apparent why you need long sleeves it will be clear once you whack a couple...

You then have to dry the nuts for a couple of weeks. Once they have dried it's time to start cracking. Start with soaking them for a couple hours to 8 hours....I find a couple works fine. I have to admit I have NEVER understood this part since I just spent the previous two weeks drying them out..... soaking will result in a slightly flexible nut that is in larger pieces. If you don't care if you have halves or bits then skip the soaking. There is still enough dye on the shell to make a big mess when you soak them...

At last you have the nut out of the shell. Bag them and freeze them, the colder the better. They keep a few weeks in the fridge but the oils will go rancid. The rancid nuts certainly won't hurt you but they have a very strong and bitter taste.

Lastly, do yourself a favor....make some home made ice cream with your black walnuts....if you are a walnut fan there is no better use of black walnuts than home made ice cream.

If you want to test the walnut ice cream taste Goode's sells really good black walnut ice cream.

Thought I would just have to crack the shells and eat them.  Guess I am going to pass as that is way to involved for me.

PD.  I also love the nigger toes but they are a bi**h to crack.  Do you like them.  Now day most all the stores have is walnuts and pecans.  I can't find the bags of mixed nuts anymore.  I can get the cans of mixed at Dollar Gen, but it is over half of peanuts.  Don't want that.
