You Can Help Reauthorize the Indiana Stroke Prevention Task Force

Dear Hoosier,

Stroke is the 4th leading cause of death among Hoosiers and the leading cause of disability in our country.  Indiana currently has one of the highest stroke rates in the country and our mortality rate from stroke is also high.

In an effort to combat the impact of stroke in Indiana, the General Assembly created the Indiana Stroke Prevention Task Force in 2004.  Unfortunately, the Task Force is set to expire this year unless the General Assembly acts to reauthorize their important work.

Please Help Reauthorize the Stroke Prevention Task Force!

Among other important topics, the Task Force was charged with:

  • assessing the needs for comprehensive care of stroke victims;
  • educating the public on the various aspects of stroke, including risk factors, prevention and available treatment options;
  • maintaining awareness among health care providers of the most effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of stroke;
  • and providing guidelines from which the care of stoke victims may have a common thread.

Please CLICK HERE to encourage your State Representative to support Senate Bill 336; a bill that would extend the duties of the task force from July 1, 2008 to July 1, 2012.

Too many Hoosiers die every year as a result of stroke.  Many more suffer debilitating, life-changing consequences that not only affect them but their family.  Although we have made some overall progress related to stroke and stroke care; much more needs to be done to address this serious health issue.

Please Help Reauthorize the Stroke Prevention Task Force!

If you have any questions please let me know!

Thanks,

Sam

"Indiana had the 7th highest stroke rate in the country in 2000,
and ranked 18th in mortality from stroke in 2002. Ten people die from stroke everyday in
Indiana. Currently, more than 2% of the population of Indiana are living with the
sequelae of stroke. The costs for the medical care of patients suffering a stroke in Indiana
was $300 million in 2001."

I haven't found any more recent data, yet.

I'd be interested in what their results were over the time they've been in business.  In other words, have they been effective in their education and have the rates in Indiana dropped, remained the same or increased.  If what they're doing isn't producing results, why throw more money at them?  Just a thought.

I will definitely send a letter to my senator and representative for the state.  This is one that needs to stay active!

I sent a email and Scott Reske  responded and said he voted for the bill and thinks it will pass.  So we will see.

Legislative Update

Indiana Stroke Prevention Task Force

Stroke is the 4th leading cause of death in Indiana and the leading cause of disability in our state and across the country.

In 2004, the General Assembly established the Indiana Stroke Prevention Task Force.  The Task Force was charged with:

  • Assessing the needs for comprehensive care of victims of stroke throughout the state.
  • Educating the public on the various aspects of stroke, including risk factors, prevention, and available treatment, with particular attention to high risk populations and geographic areas.
  • Maintaining awareness among the general public and all health care providers of the most effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of stroke.
The work of the Task Force is set to expire this year unless the General Assembly acts to reauthorize their important work.

To ensure the lifesaving wok of the Task Force will continue, the American Heart Association has strongly supported the passage of Senate Bill 336 - legislation to reauthorize the Indiana Stroke Prevention Task Force.

We are pleased to announce that Senate Bill 336 recently passed out of the House and has been sent back to the Senate for final consideration.  It is our hope that the bill will reach the Governor's desk soon!

Smoke-Free Indiana

Secondhand smoke has been scientifically proven to cause heart disease and other tobacco-related illnesses in otherwise healthy individuals.

Unfortunately, thousands of Hoosiers are exposed to secondhand smoke everyday in the workplace.  It is time for Indiana to move forward and pass a comprehensive, statewide smoke-free air bill that protects ALL workers from the deadly health consequences of secondhand smoke exposure.

Over the course of the next few months, your Advocacy staff will be working hard to educate lawmakers, business owners and the general public on the importance of working in a smoke-free environment.  However, we cannot do it alone!

We need your help to spread the message that ALL workers deserve to be protected from secondhand smoke.  To learn how you can get involved in this campaign simply CLICK HERE to send me an email!

Heart–Healthy Tip

A healthy diet and lifestyle are your best weapons to fight cardiovascular disease. It’s not as hard as you may think!  Remember, it's the overall pattern of your choices that counts.

Make the simple steps below part of your life for long-term benefits to your health and your heart.

Use up at least as many calories as you take in.

Start by knowing how many calories you should be eating and drinking to maintain your weight. Don’t eat more calories than you know you can burn up every day. Increase the amount and intensity of your physical activity to match the number of calories you take in.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week or — best of all — at least 30 minutes every day.  Regular physical activity can help you maintain your weight, keep off weight that you lose and help you reach physical and cardiovascular fitness. If you can’t do at least 30 minutes at one time, you can add up 10-minute sessions throughout the day.

Eat a variety of nutritious foods from all the food groups.

You may be eating plenty of food, but your body may not be getting the nutrients it needs to be healthy. Nutrient-rich foods have vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients but are lower in calories. To get the nutrients you need, choose foods like vegetables, fruits, whole-grain products and fat-free or low-fat dairy products most often.
