I'm subscribed to Poynter's Online-News mailing list and have been for years. Once in a while a great post or question will come through. One did over the weekend and with permission of the author, I'd like to share it with you AND get your input. Please be nice if we have more visitors. ;)

One argument I've heard in favor of open forums at news sites is that they
give you a more accurate sense of what people are thinking than you'd get if
you were heavily moderating.

Something that occurred to me after the fact: If you're only getting the
extremists, then are you really getting the whole picture? Or is it like
seeing just the mouth on Munch's The Scream?

We've had a few discussions on this list in the past about active moderation
and so forth, but I think I'm asking a more general question here: What is
the goal of having public comments? Is it just to increase "stickiness"
among your most motivated readers? (And if so, are you worried about driving
away everyone else?) Or is it to take a sampling of public opinion? (Which,
I'm sure most of us agree, is heavily skewed toward those with tin-foil
hats.)

Granted, the questions were more toward those working in the news industry, but in the spirit of JOURNALISM AS CONVERSATION, I wanted to ask you what you thought about comments on AFP and news sites in General. Be sure to mention the HB comment system(S) if you like. Thanks, K. Paul Mallasch - Publisher

hmmmm, input.  Actually I think the most devoted of forum readers and posters, who actually address the topic issues, should be wearing tin foil hats.  Most people, (and I'm not saying all) have a very set and often narrow point of view on things.   I believe one of two things, they are either young and want to prove they know it all, or they are older and have become set in their ways and thinking.  I don't think people have changed over the years with their Chicken Little mentality, they have just chosen new issues to bring the sky down on.  The saddest part to me is that they will scream and holler about what is happening around us, and while those on the other side of the fence are screaming and hollering back that it's not true, and THIS is  what is really happening all around us, both sides are speaking a lot of truth.  They just haven't managed to sort out the chafe from the wheat and stick with the truest of issues.  Making a lot of discussion moot. And no one is really listening any longer.  Except for the few level headed posters who try to be the voice of reason. Who can actually see both sides of the issue and figure it out.  Unfortunately, I think those are becoming fewer and farther in between, considering so few people are actually hearing them any longer.

My ramble for today. ;)

Good post, CC.  I agree with her.

Most of the people who get so heated about such issues never do anything to get off their asses and fix whatever issue is bothering them, either.

CC and Daisy hit the nails on the heads!  It's just constant back and forth with no progress or solutions.  What a way to waste your life!  I only come here for entertainment.  People think what they're going to think and the majority aren't going to change because of something anyone else says to them.

I post on a political forum as well called Proud Democrats, but it's a forum geared toward like-minded people.  I post there for information and to, hopefully, contribute to some intelligent discussion.  I wouldn't think of going into politics on a forum where there are people who are diametrically opposed to my views, because that's nothing more than an exercise in futility, IMO.

If they have a voice of reason within them, it's probably telling them to stay away if they don't agree with the women. ;)
