COLDEST AIR OF THE SEASON

We are about to receive the coldest air of the season. Temperatures are suppose to reach well below zero. What are you doing to prepare your home, car, family & pets for the up coming cold. Possible loss of utilities, High Wind chills, & Dangerous cold. We have reserved some extra blankets, fresh gas for the generator, extra K-1 more on hand than normal. Some extra drinking water. Dry goods, few more cans of soups and vegatables. We also closed off the West entrance to our home with plastic, this door received wind from the North & West. We still have our South facing front door entrance and attached Garage door for any emergency escape needed. What are you doing to prepare? It is not length of life, but depth of life. |

Total,
Thanks for the heads up!
Most people are woefully under-prepared for loss of basic services for more than a few hours.
Go though your house someday and figure out the following:
How much water do you have on hand for your family.
What would you eat if you had no electricity for more than 12 hours.
How would you keep your family warm?
What provisions do you have if you need to evacuate in a hurry? (less than an hour).
Feel free to add more to this list, if you can think of it.
Giggity
Dry Gas/Heet
Fuel line freeze up can be costly
The prisoner wishes to say a word.............Freedom!!!!!!!
lots of fire wood for my fireplace.....and kerosene for the heater.....my snuggie wrap close by me.... and some hot coffee to keep me warm.....

Great post and thoughts Dawg, more of us need to think about being prepared for any event.

Another great ideal, people need to pick up some gas line antifreeze and get it in their cars, truck before the cold hits.
Warm fires are wonderful to set by after being in the cold, kerosene heaters nice to have if used safely & properly. We love to have the warm blankets to take away that little chill. Drinking a nice cup of coffee as I type.
Good post Zia.
Here are a couple more.
Keeping your face warm try some moisturizing sunscreen, oil base helps protect skin, a little protein and lot of carbohydrates, some fat in your diet for long-term warmth. You must also keep your body hydrated. This helps to burn the energy correctly.
Thank you all that add to the list.
Lets hear more of what you do.

My daughter is at Ball State and she has to walk to all her classes. I'm more concerned about her staying warm and not getting frost bite than I am about the bathroom pipes freezing up (they always do when the temps get around 10 or lower). There is a shuttle that runs the course of the campus, but she says it's always full.
A recommendation an investment in some ski pants. I start wearing mine when it gets about 35 degrees weather.
Carharts are a great investment, although I don't see a College girl wanting to wear them. They Don't quite make the fashion statement today child think they need to make.. lol.. Our 16 yr old Daughter said no to them last year till she was outside for a few minutes while I was gone to shovel a path to Momma Mayhems car.
bought her a less expensive pair of Wall brand.. works for her in a pinch.
