An Ohio teenager was shot in the arm by a John McCain supporter who claims he was trying to stop the boy from stealing one of his campaign yard signs.

Question?  Whose property are the signs?  I thought they were the property of the Republican Party.  Not the property of an individual.  Guess he wasn't protecting HIS property when he shot the boy, was he?

Generally speaking, presidential signs are usually purchased from the local party or on-line, either way there's the issue of trespassing but there's no way that I would shoot a person for taking a political sign or any personal property for that matter....this will be interesting.

I've read quite a few posts in the past, over on HM which claim the right to shoot people when they are protecting their property.  I don't think that threatening the life of anyone is ever really justified over material objects.  But it seems to happen a lot.

Oh and I actually meant the signs were the property of the party affliated with the writing on the signs.  Not just Republican....I said that because it was a McCain sign.   Still I was under the impression that people simply allowed the party to post signs in their yards, and when the election was over, someone was supposed to pick them up.

Generally speaking that's true with local races but rarely with Presidential runs...maybe because they want to keep a piece of history??? Back to the shooting, I don't think the use of deadly force is warranted unless you can convince someone at the prosecutor's office that you feared that you might die if someone took your political signs...that would be a tough sale in my opinion.

I guess that would depend on who the prosecutor is...don't you think? ;)

The teen was trespassing, stealing, and not repecting property.  Good things I am not the judge and as for others let this be a lesson to ya.

Stealing campaign signs can get one in serious trouble.

Zoning laws require signs to be on private property, not "right of ways" or utility poles.  Each area may or may not have more detailed laws on size and when signs can be placed and removed.
People buy their own or get them for free and the sign should be considered the property of property owner.
Bad news is lack of law enforcement.  Stealing a sign could be overlooked or result in a Federal election law violation, jail, fines.
But one thing is for sure.  Stealing signs gets people pissed off.  Violates right of free speech.

Here it does not seen to be much of issue.  But if you go to Ohio watch out.  Emotions are high. Property damage has occured.  People intimidated, punched and shot at.  Party offices broke into and computers with data stolen.

Where as Mad County is politicaly isolated, boring and election board says no problems here.  And being brain dead protects citizens from evil activities.
