Check this out - from a Herald Bulletin story by Brandi Watters:

"ANDERSON — With only 10 business days left before a final budget must be approved with $3.8 million in expenditure cuts, the Madison County Council failed to approve expected measures to reduce the budget during Tuesday’s meeting.

"Instead, council members voted to reduce their own salaries by 5 percent after County Commissioner Paul Wilson asked to have his salary cut by 4 percent.

"Both measures were approved, and promptly followed by voluntary salary cuts by several county department heads."

They couldn't cut budget enough, but they did voluntarily offer to reduce their own salaries in some cases.  Treasurer Darlene Likens only offered a 3% paycut, hoping that would be enough to help prevent county staff layoffs.  Geeze, how much does she make?

There is more and I won't steal the HB's thunder.  You guys should read the article.

So what is the net result of the meeting? They didn't meet the shortfall.  And if I'm reading this correctly,  it looks like County Councilmen Higgins, Bostic and Patterson are stonewalling on some other money-saving issues.

Rainy day thought---not cutting contributions to retirement and not making other cuts necessary but raising taxes---hmmm will the "workers" come out ahead. I have a feeling they will not. But, they will still be making good money. lol

Kind of like raising the minimum wage-hello-everything else goes up to cover that.
