"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.

Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free -- provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Means said.

Withdrawing from the treaties was entirely legal, Means said.

"This is according to the laws of the United States, specifically article six of the constitution," which states that treaties are the supreme law of the land, he said.

Sippy, I saw this the other day when it happened, and thought that this shall be very interesting. I wasn't sure if I should/could post it. Whats your opinion on this matter? Agree? Disagree?: w/ the tribes? What do you think the response shall be from the US?

I would have to know much more than what I read in the article to make an educated opinion, OWO.  But my gut tells me that the Lakota people are probably right in their protest and right under the law of the treaty.  They certainly seem to have international support for what they're doing.  Not that that means anything to George Bush.  I agree that it is very interesting and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.  I hope that the Lakota tribe will find peace and justice.

Oops, I accidentally hit the post button twice.  I also edited the wrong post!  DUH!

I forgot to ask what are your thoughts, OWO?

Sippy, I think if we are to seriously attempt to judge what MIGHT happen, we must only look back far enough to see what HAS happened. In other words, count on NOT experiencing another Little Big Horn/General Custer type conclusion. Although a good publicity move, all this will probably go away because everybody knows that the final determinative consideration shall be who has the biggest and best firepower, and with this knowledge, all other things will fall swiftly into place. Even former president Andrew Jackson did not listen to the courts when exterminating/fighting/relocating Indians. What is shameful is how Native Americans have been marginalized, and how they have suffered throughout the centuries because of it. Does anyone really care anymore for, as you say, "peace and justice" for Native Americans? Maybe just you and I... Peace be unto you Sippy.

It is one of the most shameful things that has happened in the short course of this country's history, IMO.  Thank you for your thoughts, OWO.

It's sad to me to see how much land they once had that was taken from them by our government.

Speaking for myself, it's sadder to see the cultural and identity breakdown.
