Newsboys - Postcards of early Elwood

Elwood
was a gas boom town in the 1890's and up until the 1930's. The
population went from a few thousand to approx. 15,000 in a few short
years. Money was plentiful and the early businessmen spent their wealth
in building construction. Most of the older buildings in the uptown
area of Elwood came from this time period of 1880 - 1910. Sit back and
take a look at early Elwood! Many of the postcards came from the
collection of Jeff & Kathy Marcuson. You can find a book in the
Elwood Library with many more postcards displayed. "Elwood Postcards
From The Past" can be viewed in the Indiana Room of the library.
Postcards were a very economical way to keep in touch. Postage was a
penny and a postcard could be purchased for a nickel. You could send
your family a message and a picture of where you were! In the early
days, it has been found on postcards that all you would need would be
the persons name and the city, state ... the post office would find you!
