Publisher's Notes: How to Help AFP

By kpaul.mallasch

No, I've not been around a lot lately. There's a reason for this, however, and it's a good one. I'm not out partying, I'm working - working to have more resources for Anderson Free Press. I guess this may have been a poor decision on my part because it's come to my attention that many people feel I have abandoned this site or don't care for its welfare. Let me put that to rest here and now. I'm out working so hard to help AFP in the long run.

Notes From a Publisher: How to Make Money Online - Part One

By kpaul.mallasch

This is going to be an ongoing series, so bear with me. I'm still swamped with work, but I wanted to take a few moments to write some thoughts down about this and ask you want you want to know specifically. With that in mind, here are some of the basics of making money online.

Notes From a Publisher: What do you DO for a living?

By kpaul.mallasch

I ran into someone at the grocery this evening and was asked this question ... again. It seems to come up a lot. Lately, most of my limited income (enough to pay the bills and scrape by - try to catch up from 'the lean years'...) has come from freelance work (writing and other things online). I do make some money from AFP and my other sites, though. My virtual real estate if you will.

Notes From a Publisher: AFP - Miss a Day, Miss a Lot

By kpaul.mallasch

Wow. What a day. Being a modern publisher sure isn't easy work - especially since I'm not really doing it full time. Yes, I do a lot of freelancing to pay the bills. Anyway, I feel bad for not being at the school board meeting tonight. I thought about it, but the work involved was a lot - to do a video and what-not. (And yet here I am wasting time writing a blog post, right?) Some days it seems like you can never win or get ahead.

Notes from a Publisher: On Living in Anderson, Indiana

By kpaul.mallasch

My, how time flies. I was thinking the other day that I've lived in Indiana longer than I lived in Cleveland, Ohio growing up. Does this make me a Hoosier?

I've been living in Anderson over eight months now, and I have to say I like my neighborhood and like the city. (Perhaps it's just that I lived in Elwood for three years - that's a story for another blog post someday maybe. Smile.)

Notes from a Publisher: Concerning Lisa Hathcoat, Anderson High School and the Future of Journalism

By kpaul.mallasch

I've given this some thought today (amongst dealing with other issues on the site, and lots of client work) and think I should probably say something. This whole 'issue' or series of events is pretty interesting to me. The thought occurred to me that the 'students' who posted today might not actually be students. There's no way to honestly tell.

(On a quick side note - does anyone think I gave out TMI - too much information - with just saying the ISP?)

Notes from a Publisher: Mallard Lake Landfill Issue IS Important

By kpaul.mallasch

Had a nice cup of coffee and conversation with some people today and was introduced to the Mallard Lake Landfill Issue. I have to admit my ignorance on the subject. (Before the meeting, between other writing gigs, I'd Googled it and saw that it's been going on for 30 years.) All I can say is ... wow. I was instantly reminded of my experience with the CAFO problem in Indiana.  As I listened and jotted notes, I was amazed that this was still going on and that more people weren't wanting to know exactly what was going on. (So many questions!)

Notes from a Publisher: On my Departure from The Star Press

By kpaul.mallasch

Colts Fan recently asked why I left my job at The Star Press in Muncie as it must have paid pretty well. I left an answer there, but I wanted to repost it as a blog for some people who might not know me. Thanks.

The official word / designation I was given was that my position was being eliminated and I was being downsized. There's a story behind the story, of course. My position was combined with the same position in Marion, IN to save costs. Gannett is in even more serious trouble now financially.

AFP Call for Help #1 - Need Water Heater Installed

By kpaul.mallasch

Our relatively new but gaining a good reputation quickly member - rusty - came up with a good idea last week. It didn't go quite as planned, but what in life usually does? However, that doesn't mean that we can't try the idea again.

I don't have a lot of money left after keeping AFP up and running, but AFP itself has value. In fact, it's value increases each and every day it stays online. (Websites are like wines and better when aged...) With that in mind, here's my offer.
