Internet Video

Being without Cable or Satellite, my television viewing is quite limited.  So I've found several sites on the internet where I can view programming for no more cost than firing up my computer and having a DSL internet connection. I can't say I have a favorite site that I use, but there is one particular site that gives you the ability to download a program and you can select from what they have available online to watch without ever having to go to their site.  Veoh.com is the site, and their media player is a bit more than just a viewer for their videos.  There are videos available for download, and the program has a builtin download manager.  You can subscribe to video feeds and have them downloaded also.  There is an Interactive section that allows you to view the videos you've searched for while exploring widgets from yourminis.com.  There are also a few games you can play while watching the videos.  It's an interesting program and sometimes keeps me entertained for hours.  It connects to several different sites for video feeds one of them being Youtube.com.  You can view the hottest watched videos from that site right in the program, and after you've watched few, the program will start selecting recommended videos based on what you appear to like.    I found this widget on yourminis.com, and thought I would try to share a little of veoh with you.

Try a search for actual television shows and see what comes up. I will suggest a couple. CSI, Medium, House, or maybe even Big Brother. :)

Veoh.com pulls video from

Veoh.com pulls video from hulu.com and can display it through the Veoh program.  I've noticed though that Veoh doesn't pull all that's offered from hulu's site.  Another good one to go to is www.surfthechannel.com. They offer full length movies that apparently are on servers in other countries. Mostly Japanese sites it would appear, but the movies are in English and rarely have oriental subtitles.  When I get really bored around the house I'll look for a movie there that I haven't seen before, or I'll look to see if any of my childhood television shows are available.  I especially like that I on these sites I can find Night Gallery and The Sixth Sense, 2 of my all time favorites. :)

Are there any significant

Are there any significant delays in timing for caches you get filled and data to be transfered, especially from foreign sites?

So far, there seem to be

So far, there seem to be only a few seconds of buffering and then it's a pretty steady stream.  But I'm also using the step up dsl through AT&T.  I believe my download rate is somewhere close to 3.5. I wouldn't try to view any of these video sites using a dialup connection.  The buffering would last forever, and the video would probably be pretty choppy.

That's my setup, so I could expect similar results....Thanks!

This being able to watch

This being able to watch full programs on the internet at times can be a life saver with the kids.  I can literally select the programming I want them to watch.  In this case, I'm really talking about itty bitty.  Once again, without being able to have satellite or cable installed, television is boring.  She can only read, write, color and play games for so long before she needs to settle down...and become bored.  Like typical 6 year olds, her programming of choice involves cartoons. I found a whole list of episodes of Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers.  Kept her entertained for a couple of hours.  While I engaged in my own activities.  After I changed the episodes for her a couple of times, she understood which links to select to choose her own 'next episode'.  All I had to do was keep my ears open to make sure she didn't choose a video inappropriate for her.  When I eventually heard 'I'm a barbie girl, in a barbie world" I knew she was done watching cartoons, and had pulled up youtube.  Time to get off the computer. LOL  And it was too, I herded her to bed and put on the boring television.

But the whole point is......these sites are great for selecting exactly what you want your kids to watch and they don't know the difference between the internet, and television. :)

You can check out this site too: www.sidereel.com  You might have to join the site to view the videos.  I haven't joined, but a friend of mine uses the site all the time. :)

I was watching a movie on

I was watching a movie on hulu.com this evening.  One of those slightly obscure 1950's B-movies.  I decided to go to www.imdb.com and take a look at the plot summary for it.  Lo and behold, you can now watch full length movies and tv videos from their site too!!!  Won't be long and no one will need to watch television with a set. LOL

Does that mean some people

Does that mean some people would not have to worry about DTV if they just have a computer and the internet?

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken.

You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

I think that depends on the

I think that depends on the programs that are available online, and if someone wants to sit and watch them on a computer screen.  The programs available now, new television shows, are usually available online the day after they air.  Just check, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc, websites to see which full episodes they offer.  Movies on the other hand, are a little harder to come by.  But there are a lot of full length features available, if you search for them.

There's also StarzPlay, offered by Verizon online, for 5.99 (6.35 when you add tax) a month.  You can download from around 2500 movie titles that have been shown on Starz. You can also stream the current showing of whatever is playing on the Starz channel.  I do have that one.
