Free Community Preparedness Fair set for July 26 in Muncie

MUNCIE - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will present the 4th Annual FREE Community Preparedness Fair, Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Memorial Building at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Muncie. 

This year’s fair will showcase more than 25 displays, demonstrations and activities on a variety of preparedness topics. The fair is geared to provide awareness and education on preparedness issues and encourage individuals and families to become self-reliant. Muncie and Delaware County residents as well as those in surrounding counties are welcome to attend. 

Speaking of the recent earthquakes, tornadoes and floods in Central Indiana, Director of Delaware County Emergency Management, Bill Gosnell said, “People must educate and prepare themselves and their families for disasters that continue to occur in Indiana. It is an individual’s responsibility to become educated and aware about disaster planning and preparedness, if anyone expects to be on the winning side of a disaster. They are called disasters and you can choose to be a victim or a survivor it is up to you. Become disaster smart and learn what you can to do to be prepared.” 

Displays and information will include meal planning, identity theft, 72-hour emergency kits, water storage and purification, food storage, financial planning, sanitation, emotional health, physical exercise, nutrition, infection control, employment resources, pet care, education and financial assistance, humanitarian aid, weather awareness, spiritual preparedness, garden planning, and emergency medical care.  

The Indiana Blood Center will be on hand conducting a community blood drive. Center Township Fire Department will provide information on fire safety and smoke detectors. The Delaware County Emergency Management Agency will share multi-media presentations and literature on planning and preparation for natural disasters as well as pandemic situations. The American Red Cross Muncie Chapter will have several items on display including Disaster Supply Starter Kits as well as information on a variety of emergency-related issues. The Muncie Area Amateur Radio Club’s local Ham Radio operators will conduct emergency communications demonstrations. 

Other area organizations in attendance will include F.E.M.A.., C.E.R.T., LifeStream Services, Salvation Army, Vectren, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Meridian Services, Boy Scouts, and more.
