Indiana State Police recently launched a criminal investigation after receiving information that a Posey County man had lost over $250,000 through a sweepstakes scam.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had received a document in the mail back in July from “Embassy International” informing him that he was the grand prize winner of the U.S. Sweepstakes. The document went on to say that participants were selected through a computer ballot system drawn from 15,000,000 names of individuals from all 52 states. Since the victim had won first prize, he was going to be awarded $5,500,000. The victim was also instructed he was responsible for all legal fees and state related taxes. He was informed that the tax money must be submitted and accounted for within seven days. The victim had sent Embassy International over $250,000 before realizing he had been scammed.
Indiana State Police want to remind everyone that scammers are preying on Indiana residents everyday. It is important to remember that if a deal sounds too good to be true, then most likely it is. Before sending any money to an organization that you are not familiar with, it’s important to contact your local Better Business Bureau or your Indiana State Police.Source: Indiana State Police
