ANDERSON, IN - During a time of year that lends itself to widespread celebrations, the Labor Day holiday can quickly turn tragic when an impaired motorist gets behind the wheel.  According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI), the 2007 Labor Day holiday period (6:00 p.m. August 31 through 5:59 a.m. September 4) was the second most deadly time of year on Indiana roadways, resulting in 11 alcohol-related fatalities and 18 alcohol-related collisions.

In an effort to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on Indiana roadways during the 2008 Labor Day holiday, the Anderson Police Department will join thousands of fellow law enforcement officers representing more than 250 state and local law enforcement agencies to launch the “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” crackdown on impaired driving and motorcycle riding.  This statewide campaign will take place from August 15–September 1.

“As we celebrate this Labor Day it is important to remember that driving is a privilege and not a right.  As responsible drivers we must all assume accountability for our actions before getting behind the wheel,” said Chief Darron Sparks, “I especially want to urge all citizens to be proactive by designating a sober driver before celebrating.  Exercising this simple precaution could ultimately save a life.”

Through high-visibility patrols, sobriety checkpoints and other enforcement efforts designed to deter impaired driving particularly during the high-risk nighttime hours, law enforcement will be on the look out for those who drive or operate a motorcycle while impaired or intoxicated during this high-risk time.

According to the 2008 Indiana Traffic Safety Alcohol Fact Sheet, published by ICJI, motorcycles, pickup trucks and SUVs were over-represented in alcohol-related collisions statewide in 2007 and were more likely to produce injury.  Data also indicates that male drivers between the ages of 21 and 29 killed in motor vehicle collisions were legally intoxicated 43 percent of the time.

I wish that they could

I wish that they could crack down on all of the dui drivers, but I know that is impossible, I really hate the tragedy that it can cause.

they need to have harsher

they need to have harsher punishment for these repeated offenders.  How does one get 6 dwi's,,,,,and still get the fees waived to get his license back again?  Then yesterday....he is caught again....driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while suspended.  The person just got out of prison for dealing cocaine to an undercover cop(he served less than a year)...was put on work release....then in April was put on probation.  He has started all his crap again.....drinking, doing crack, evidently driving with no license....and guess what???....they let him back out on bond even though he should have had a probation violation hold for at least 10 days.  What do we have to do.....wait until he seriously hurts someone?

I thought third strike you

I thought third strike you are out, maybe it does not apply to drinking and driving. I was thinking of an old man that lived down the street from us when I was little, I am sure that he was convicted and lost his license, but if I remember right he held the title for Indiana for having the most convictions. I don't remember if he is the one that passed away or not, so I would rather not post his name.

I don't know about Indiana

I don't know about Indiana but in Mississippi, it's the third one.  Although around here, if you have money and/or friends, you can surpass all those pesky little laws and just keep right on driving with a suspended license.  There's a big stink with one of our judges and a lawyer who's had I don't know how many DUI's.  A good cop got suspended while they investigated why the judge allowed this dirtbag lawyer buddy to go free with no bond.  It was at least his 5th DUI arrest.  He's been convicted three times of DUI, but has avoided trial on the 4th arrest, hence avoided conviction for years.  It's shameful!
