GREENWOOD, IN - The Marching Woodmen will be at the Blues Bros. Car Wash from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 23. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) will also be on hand to talk about nonpoint source pollution and the importance of proper car washing methods.
Blues Bros. Car Wash is donating the use of its facility, which utilizes environmentally-friendly soaps and processes.
"IDEM is committed to improving water quality throughout the state," said Thomas Easterly, IDEM commissioner. "Each of us can reduce nonpoint source pollution and contribute to improving water quality by making small changes, such as washing the car in the grass or at a car wash facility instead of on a driveway or parking lot."
Everyday activities can leave contaminants on the ground, which get swept into lakes, rivers and storm sewers by water. Nonpoint source pollution is the leading cause of impaired water quality throughout the country, and it affects aquatic ecosystems and wildlife.
Hoosiers can reduce their nonpoint source pollution by using phosphorous-free fertilizer; watering lawns sparingly; cleaning up animal waste; absorbing oil, antifreeze and grease spills with sawdust; and disposing of trash properly.
