Character Counts celebrates 10 years in Madison County

ANDERSON, IN - The Character Counts! (CC!) program will celebrate its 10-year anniversary through a series of special events, October 9 -19.  The City of Anderson adopted the Character Counts! (CC!) program in 1998.  Scheduled activities will spotlight the growth of Anderson as a CC! community. 
 
 “We live in a community that is built on a foundation of strong values and will continue to build on that foundation well into the future,” said Kris Ockomon, mayor of the City of Anderson.  “Anderson has been a Character Counts! community for ten years and awareness of the six pillars of character has spread throughout schools, government, and private businesses.”
 
“What began in one classroom 10 years ago now reaches classrooms throughout Madison County,” said Don Peslis, director of the Center for Character Development at Anderson University.  “This celebration is setting the stage for the continuation of this important program for our community and building a foundation for good solid moral character into the future.”
 
Highlighted among the events are a Block Party that that will dedicate the new Edgewater Park Bridge as well as the “Sandi & Friends, A Celebration of Character” concert hosted by Anderson University at Reardon Auditorium.  The week-long celebration schedule includes:
 
City of Anderson City Ordinance 2008:
 
Mayor Kris Ockomon will present a city ordinance before the Anderson City Council October 9, 2008, in honor of Character Counts! and character Education in Madison County, the ordinance will recognize 10 years of Anderson as a CC! CC! 10 Year Celebration, Block Party & City of Anderson Bridge Dedication:
Anderson Community Schools and the City of Anderson will "Cross the Bridge" during a city-wide parade on October 11 that will include a dedication of the new Edgewater Park Bridge. The event will occur from 12 noon - 2 p.m. and involve county school districts, firemen, police officers, sheriff departments and emergency personnel. 
 
City of Anderson CC! Town Hall Meeting:

Anderson Community Schools, the Center for Character Development, and Character Counts of Madison County will join the City of Anderson for a "Town Hall Meeting" featuring comedian/character educator Dr. Mike Thomson on Thursday October 16 at 12 noon in the City Hall Auditorium.  This event is free to the public and a reception will precede the event.  Call Tammy Bowman, City of Anderson, for more information at (765) 648-6009 or tabowman@cityofanderson.com
 
CCD Homecoming Concert:
 
Sandi & Friends, A Celebration of Character!
Gospel music legend Sandi Patty and special guest Patrick Henry Hughes, recently featured on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” will perform with other artists during “Sandi and Friends: A Benefit Celebrating Character” on Sunday, October 19, at 7 p.m. in Reardon Auditorium.  Also featured during the concert will be renowned Christian recording artist Nicole C. Mullen, comedienne Anita Renfroe, and popular speaker/author Patsy Clairmont.  All net proceeds from the concert will benefit the Center for Character Development at Anderson University. Tickets are $25 for artist circle, $20 for main floor seating and $17 for balcony.  Group purchases of 10 or more tickets are $15.  Student tickets (with an ID) are $10.  Contact the Reardon Auditorium box office (765-641-4140) or Ticketmaster (service fees apply) atwww.ticketmaster.com.
 
Founded in 1993 by the Josephson Institute of Ethics, the purpose of the CC! Coalition is to fortify the lives of America’s young people with consensus ethical values called the “Six Pillars of Character.” These values, which transcend divisions of race, creed, politics, gender and wealth, are: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
 
Formed in 2000, the mission of The Center for Character Development at Anderson University is to recognize, enhance, teach and sustain positive qualities in the lives of persons in order to promote civility through character development. The intent of this initiative, now a part of the School of Education at AU, is to foster greater understanding and cooperation among individuals and organizations and help develop a positive environment to address issues that will shape the future.
