AFD Firefighter Phil Edmondson Arrested for DWI

I'm waiting for a call back from Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson with more details, but I've confirmed that Phil Edmondson (Spelling?) was arrested on 12/21/08 for DWI.

Anyone have more details?

As soon as I hear back from the MadCo Sheriff, I'll write-up a proper story.

HB has the story . I guess we were both correct . APD worked the accident investigation and an MCPD officer made the arrest .

I am sorry but I think those kine of stories should be left to the HB fishwrap.  Everyone is entitled to a mistake.  Have you ever made a mistake in your life????  All AFD and APD risk their lives for each of us every day they go to work.  Sorry that is just my opinion.

I sort of agree Colts Fan...but driving while intoxicated is not a mistake....it is something they know they should not do and do it anyway.  A mistake is when you don't know right from wrong.....and most adults know that it is wrong to drive when you have been drinking.....am I making any sense here????  But I agree that it should not be news for everyone to know about.  heck, if they printed everybody's name that got arrested for drinking and driving, the paper would be twice as thick!!!   Just my opinion though and I know that you have yours.  Still love ya though..

Merry Christmas my friend!!

I have to admit I am probably one of the strongest anti-drinking and driving person, I almost lost my son to a horrible accident involving drinking and driving, and that is still a very touchy subject with me. I do agree that some of the time some people are used of more of an example than the regular Joe Schmoe, why drag someones name down when there are how many others arrested for the same thing day in and day out.

Just my opinion.

Folks were not talking about buzz driving or blowing a .08, the fishwrap "stated" he was almost 3 times the legal limit and my sources tell me that it was more like 4 times with a blood test to follow. If you can funtion at three or four times the limit, you didn't just screw up....you're an alcoholic. Look at the time of the accident he caused and ask yourself this, "I wonder what his BAC would have been if he had to work a shirt that starts at 7 am....he would still be legally impaired. While it's true we all have made mistakes and these men and women are just regular people like us, they do play a very important role in our safety as well as their own. What if he was a surgeon? Who you want someone cutting you open a few hours later who was legally impaired aka drunk?

He's already on unpaid leave and possibly could loose his job, who knows? What if the person he hit when he was tanked died as a reult of his reckless decission, would everone have a change of heart? Does it take a death or serious injury to an innocent by-stander or child to reach that threshold of "he should loose his job"? There weren't any signs that he tried to break before the collision, he should thank God that he didn't kill someone.

So before anyone reads me the right act, I occassionally enjoy a drink or two and when I've drank, I don't drive...simple. If I want to kill myself out of stupidity, that's one thing but there are other innocent people who didn't sign up for that ride. Finally, I know and like Phil, he's a good guy but anyone who knows him well knows he's got and had a problem with alcohol and needs help when he's ready. Maybe this accident was a wake up call for Phil or at least I hope it was and he gets help regardless of the outcome.

Salmon Fan...I agree that he is held in a higher standard than the average Joe.  I just don't see why they had to print an article about his arrest.  is it because he is a firefighter and not an average Joe?  But I still don't see drinking and driving a "mistake".....just my opinion.....and if he was that "drunk" then he needs to be on unpaid leave....and required to get help for his problem before he is allowed to come back on the force.

Drinking and driving is "poor judgement" at best, regardless of how much you comsume. Having stated that, the article might not have been written if he hadn't been involved in an accident. If it was a OUI without an accident, it should have made the arrest log or the vitals in the paper regardless but it wasn't the case. And again, I know and like Phil and I hope that he does seek treatment and stay sober but as any recovering adict or alcoholic can tell you, it's up to him and people quit often don't seek help until they've reached bottom and I hope this is what it took for him to bottom out.

I gotta back Salmon on this one. If it takes getting his name in the paper for an accident which could have killed someone while he was driving drunk, and the embarrassment causes him to lay off the booze, then it may save an entire family in the future.  It sounds like people know he's got a problem and maybe this is the Universe's (God to some of you) way of doing an intervention for him before something irretrievably serious happens.
