Letter: Indiana State Parks and Reservoirs are in Jeopardy
By Barbara Sha Cox
Are you a camper, own a boat, fisherman, or just a lover of nature? Do you believe in protecting our state parks, and state-owned reservoirs and our Indiana taxpayer dollars?
House Bill 1075 has been referred to the Senate Energy and Environmental Committee. This Committee is chaired by Senator Gard- s28@in.gov . If this bill does not receive a hearing, it will die. This bill would protect our state-owned reservoirs and state parks with a buffer zone of two miles from all CFO and CAFO buildings. Those in the area now would be allowed expansion.
Why is this important? The revenue from the state parks and reservoirs total over $21,262,645. Tax dollars are used for renovation at the parks. The total visitors to the parks in 2008 was 17,679,287. The visitors also create satellite economic development.
Will the issues of odor, manure application, traffic near the facilities, and public health issues near the CFOs and CAFOs ruin our state parks and reservoirs? This bill would protect our parks and reservoirs for now and future generations. ACT TODAY, please call 800-382-9467 or email Senator Gard and ask for a hearing on House Bill 1075.

Sure would hate to have a CAFO anywhere near a reservoir. It's bad enough to let people motorboat on them, but to add CAFO runoff would seem to create a nightmare trying to clean the water again and make it potable.
sad indiana is still fighting these. i got involved a little when they tried to put one in MadCo up near The Wood...
