Hillery Shepherd Receives Inaugural Character Counts Student of the Month Award
ANDERSON, IN – When the younger sister of one of her fellow students at Killbuck Elementary was critically burned third grader Hillery Shepherd did what most of us might have. She said a prayer and offered her support.
It was what Hillery would do next that set her apart from her classmates, and well most everyone else. According to her principal, Judy Ketring, Hillery helped organize a hat day fundraiser. On April 24, students, faculty and staff were encouraged to wear their favorite hat to school.
Participants were asked to make a nominal donation to help raise monies for the victim’s family who make frequent trips to Riley Children’s Hospital while she undergoes treatment. Hillery was able to provide $905.00 to help offset the family’s costs.
Each month the Anderson Police and Fire Departments will recognize a Character Counts Student of the Month for actions defining one of the six pillars of character that include trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, fairness, caring and citizenship. Killbuck Principal Judy Ketring nominated Hillery for her emphasis on caring.
The award is open to all elementary and middle school students. Monthly winners receive a t-shirt and medal recognizing their accomplishment. Hillery is the inaugural winner of the Character Counts Student of the Month.
