Day of Service and Remembrance at Fire Rescue House
ANDERSON, IN - This Friday, September 11, 2009, Mayor Kris Ockomon and guests from throughout Madison County will gather at 2pm at the site of the Madison County Fire Rescue House to commemorate the first National Day of Service and Remembrance. The public is invited to attend.
The mission and purpose of the Day of Service and Remembrance is “to honor the victims of 9/11 and those who rose to service in response to the attacks by annually rekindling the spirit of service, tolerance, and compassion that unified America and the world in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.” The National Day of Service and Remembrance is a result of the Serve America Bill, proposed by Senators Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch and signed by President Barack Obama in April. Thousands of not for profit organizations around the country are planning service projects on this date.
Locally, the Fire Rescue House is being built with volunteer labor and generous private donations to extend the rescue of victims of fire throughout Madison County from the fire scene to the critical first weeks after the fire. The land has been prepared, the foundation built, and the walls are being erected this week. To volunteer on the project, contact Skip Ockomon at 425-1936.
