ANDERSON, IN - Six Anderson city parks are wired for free internet access, thanks to a one-year pilot project, Mayor Kevin S. Smith announced today. The quality of life advancement is a byproduct of the city’s aggressive pursuit of technology that has delivered internet access to every public school in Anderson and is providing automated reading of meters for its water and electric utilities.

“The city of Anderson has focused on infrastructure improvements as a means of rebuilding our job base,” said Mayor Smith. “Cities that invest in themselves demonstrate they are worthy of investment. Our focus on paving, delivery of electric, water and sewage services, and now wireless internet in our parks pays off by providing an excellent quality of life for our citizens.”

Free wireless internet at city parks will likely be the extent of the city’s wireless service to residents. The service is being introduced in six city parks, and other may be added. The parks include:

    * Town Center Park, 12th & Meridian
    * Shadyside (west of Killbuck Creek), 1112 N. Broadway
    * Gen. Pulaski Park, East 38th St. and Forest Terrace
    * Jackson Park, 22nd & Raible
    * Athletic Park, East 8th & Wilcon St.
    * Grandview-Harmon Park, 2030 Van Buskirk Rd.

Mayor Smith and Anderson Light and Power Superintendent Tom Donoho demonstrated the wireless internet in Town Center Park and then spoke via remote link to 3rd District City Councilman J. Stapleton at Gen. Pulaski Park and Parks Superintendent Doug Zook at Jackson Park.

The pilot program is to gather data on how citizens use the service and where. Availability will be adjusted on public feedback.  The pilot program will run through summer 2008.

Anderson Mayor Kevin S. Smith, from Town Center Park, speaks via wireless internet to 3rd District City Councilman J. Stapleton in Gen. Pulaski Park several miles away. The demonstration was held to announce a free wireless internet pilot program in six Anderson city parks.
