Version 2.0 - AFP Thread of Rules, Style and Etiquette - a Work in Progress
Great rules. I'm terrible with unintentional thread-jacking, but I'm trying to be more aware. I just have major chat ADD and it's not easy to stay on topic sometimes. I typically stay topic-related, but it'll have my own sidebar story, which tends to get me totally off track. :)
Question on language--what do we consider acceptable vs. raw language. Yes, I understand the "f-bomb" itself, but how do you feel about variations (i.e. the phrase "f-bomb," or words like "fecking" or "freaking?"). Also, what are "no no words?" I use "damn" a lot, along with "ass" or sometimes if I'm thinking about it, I'll change it to "arse." But sometimes, in heavily charged writing, I don't think about it. What, would you say, is good or bad? And yeah, I've heard the "what would you feel comfortable saying in public, around your mom, around your kids" guidelines, but those don't work for me. I'm a trucker-wife. Language is just words, to me. I just try to be respectful of other peoples' beliefs, but I don't censor myself at home. Well, not too much. I don't let the "f-bomb" fly in front of my kids, unless it slips out in a moment of extreme anger or pain. :)

Well, I think the George Carlin routine most certianly applies. I belive it should site-wide. Even in TIO.
In that regard... Should we censor subjectively, or objectively?
Objective: The most fair and easiest to defend. No one can argue why his $h!t made it through and hers didn't.
Subjective: The best to facilliate communication. Opens up the realm for arguments and alleged favoritism.
As far as the "Carlin Routine" it should be objective. No exceptions. I see the leeways for the occasional other words. One criteria though, no profanity in arguements. That is the easiest way to lose respect in my book. If I am having an arguement with you, and you start busting out the profanity, we are done. Obviously you can not hold a simple debate.
I don't know if what I put helped out at all or not, but so far that is my take.

My big one I won't allow here is taking the Lord's name in vain (I'm sure you all know the one I'm talking about. That's the big one to me...)
As for the F word and others, as a poet, they're just words to me. Powerful words that can be diluted with overuse, but useful parts of the miraculous thing we call language. That said, I'm sure others will have other thoughts on this. It's probably good to spell them out, though.
Anyone else?
Good points, Dawg.
“Fear not the soul of a poet, for it is yours to develop, to keep, and to use.” Words of OldWiseOne, 2007.

I think you might be right, Dawg. That's the direction I'm leaning.
I mean, we can communicate as well with other words... (As I've shown, the thesaurus can be fun... ;)
Lord's name in vain...I'm gonna fall victim to that one, I'm sure. Not because I'm trying to be blasphemous or troublesome. It just rolls off my tongue because my dad's favorite word when I was a kid was "goddamit!" LOL I don't even think of it as a flame on God/Jesus/Whatever your belief. It's just something that I've only recently realized offends others. Sooooo...if I say it, please, just gently smack me--at least at first. :)

Oooh and I LOOOOVE the thesaurus. Back in my journalism majoring days of school, I was a total thesaurus junkie! I carried it EVERYWHERE. Now, I live and die by my reference.thesaurus.com site

Heh. Can you edit it out? Please?
Thanks.
Or I guess we could leave it...

I love their new design. It was horrid (that and dictionary.com for a while), but the new owners have it set-up really nice. I can't imagine the amount of traffic they get on a daily basis.

I understand your thoughts on that, but, if we want this to grow as a community website we have to think as the community. Theres 2 lines you have to keep your eye on. Watching your current population, and not appearing as a "sell-out" to them by taking on rules in the spirt of newcomers. Then you have to watch your own personal convictions and make sure the direction you lead the site, is really your mission for it.
