I thought many people would think differently about this than the Vote shows..
I think there's a difference between asking if you have what it takes or if you'd WANT to.
I think it would be interesting to explore just what folks think it would take to survive just such an event.
How many of you like to camp in primative conditions? Do you know how?
How many of you hunt & fish?
How many of you know how to purify water and render it safe for drinking?
How many own firearms and are trained to use them; moreover, how many know how to effectively implement and execute a personal security program?
My thoughts; most folks automatically assume that some magical government entity is going to come to their rescue within a matter of hours or at worst days. The reality is that in some types of events this may not happen; just look at what happened during Katrina. (It took the government 5 days to deliver water to the Superdome).
For some of us the "right kind" of event could end up costing us our lives while we await rescue. For many, the 5th or 6th day in primative conditions under Marshall law would be the critical ones. . .
How many of you like to camp in primative conditions? Do you know how?
Or how many of you watch Bear Grylls in "Man vs. Wild"? :)
How many of you hunt & fish?
Or know how to fashion devices from nature that will help you hunt & fish?
How many of you know what wild plants and roots are edible and how to prepare them? Can you start a fire without matches or lighters? Can you cook your own food?
How many of you know how to purify water and render it safe for drinking?
And what would you do if you didn't have the purification tablets?
How many own firearms and are trained to use them; moreover, how many know how to effectively implement and execute a personal security program?
And what would happen when you ran out of ammo? For me, this brings up the question of group survival: who would survive - the people with the biggest guns and the most ammo who could forcefully TAKE what they needed, or the people who could work cooperatively with other survival groups?

In the event of a worldwide catastrophe, government as we know it would cease to exist. There would be only chaos. What would happen then?

Which brings up another question - would you join a group or strike out on your own? Which way would you be more likely to survive, and why?

All very interesting & thought out questions.. I feel the many that now live in less formidable conditions will be good survivors.. They already somewhat know how to survive on a shoestring type budget.. I don't think they will be as prepared as many upper class could be with a home generating system, some amount of stored foods and a Hand survival guide in looseleaf, printed from some Internet site.. "what if the S.H.T.F. type guide" They will be sustained for a small amount of time before the Hard cored individual(s), or found thug groups raid their home and take what they want from the Family..
The Family Farm is in a good location, we have food, items for trade or barter, along with protection (that is all I will say) also.. Groups of our Family would migrate there for some time to survive and protect each other until it was to uneventful or a more critical point was reached.. There are enough fairly trained Males in the family to subside there for sometime...
Some have been raised to prepare for the future,(I intend on being in this variable) others only live for the here & now.. Those will be the ones that will suffer the most in (always a convenience to run to the store for needed items) They only have the here and now to live, it will/may be very well all gone...
With some preparation, skills and know how, many will flourish... Battery power lighting, Basic Generator building using car alternators, Water Filtration with Sand & Charcoal, Many may not have knowledge of "Producer Gas" or how to build one to power engines.. Along with a Bug out Vehicle to power through any obstacle allowing you to move to a more inhabitable area..
We can only hope that something like this will not happen although, with the overabundance of populace & urban area growth, the Governments involvement in almost every aspect of individuals lifes, & the distrait sometimes pressured alliance of "The Sheep" a tragedy, or revolt of sort can happen in a minimal time frame.
It is inevitable eventually to "Come to Fruition"..
I see the Vote has changed from the past of..
More votes of "NO" to more of a "YES" state..
Glad to see & know that..lol
I have to admit, I don't have everything I would need to survive a catastrophe, but I know I can stay with Nana and she has more than enough for me and my family, as well as hers, for at least two months!
I DON'T HAVE WATER PUT UP LIKE I DO IN THE WINTER, ALSO NEED GAS PUT UP FOR THE GENERATOR I CAN'T SLEEP WITH OUT IT.WE HAVE GAS TO COOK ON OUT SIDE, AND MY SON CAN FISH OR HUNT WE ALSO HAVE LIVE TRAPS.SO I SAY MAYBE WITH WORKING MOM ,LITTLE MAN,J4FAND HER HUBBY MY SON AND MYSELF MAYBE AWHILE.
