INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita announced today that so far in 2008, more than a half million Hoosiers have either registered to vote for the first time or updated their existing voter registration records. The total number of eligible voters registered in Indiana is now nearly 4.4 million with six weeks remaining until the October 6 voter registration deadline.

SAT scores flat in Indiana, nationwide

State calls upon students to take rigorous courses seriously, urges schools to ensure rigorous curriculum and instruction

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - SAT results released today revealed that scores for the high school class of 2008 remained relatively flat both nationally and in Indiana compared to a year ago. Indiana’s average score on the college entrance exam showed a one-point gain in math (508), a one-point drop in reading (496) and a two-point decrease in writing (481) for a combined score of 1485 (1487 in 2007). Nationally, average scores remained unchanged across the board in math (515), reading (502) and writing (494) for a combined score of 1511. 

US Remains Open to Dialogue With Moscow on Missle Defense


The U.S. Russian-relationship has chilled noticeably over Russian intervention in Georgia and Moscow's bitter reaction to the U.S. missile defense deal with Poland.

But Undersecretary Rood says he see no indication  Russia intends to pull back from nuclear arms control agreements with the United States, and says Washington will keep trying to assuage Russian concerns about the missile defense program.

State Health Department Releases Medical Error Report

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indiana State Department of Health today released the annual report of the Medical Error Reporting System (MERS), which includes reported events for calendar year 2007.  The report is designed to provide reliable data on medical errors and improve patient safety.  According to the data, 105 medical errors were reported for 2007 with 101 events occurring at hospitals and 4 events occurring at ambulatory surgery centers.

MUNCIE, IN -  Mayor Sharon McShurley has appointed members to the reorganization committee established when resolutions
were passed by Muncie Common Council and Delaware County Council this year.  Per Indiana Code 36-1.5-4-16 ".three members shall be appointed
by the executive of each political subdivision participating in the reorganization.  Not more than two of the members appointed by an executive of a political subdivision may be members of the same political party."
