Bicycle tour grows with greenway.

MUNCIE, IN - Mark your calendar for July 26th and the 8th annual Great Greenway Tour bicycle ride. The ride was started as a way to promote the Cardinal Greenway. The greenway has expanded in the past few years and organizers have seen the tour grow as well. Each year more cyclists turn out to experience Indiana’s longest paved rail-trail. The 12 foot wide smooth paved surface travels through a mostly rural area in East Central Indiana.

Even the name has grown to recognize the sponsorship of the tour this year. It is now the Midwest Health Strategies Great Greenway Tour. The Delaware Cycling Club and Anderson’s Spoke and Wheel club have teamed up with the rehabilitation service as well as the Muncie Sanitary District to promote healthy, clean and fun activities such as bicycling.

“The tour is a good fit with the governor’s push to expand the state’s trails,” said Delaware Cycling Club President Mark Lohmar. He went on to say, “The GGT plays an important role in raising funds for maintenance of the trail.”

There will be distances for all ages and ability levels including seven routes from 20 miles to the 114 mile “see-it-all” tour. Kirk’s Bike Shop will be on hand to make sure your bike is ready and T-Shirts commemorating the ride are also available. Registered riders will be treated to lunch, and home-made cookies at rest stops along the way. The family-friendly ride is free to cyclists 17 years old and under when they ride with an adult.

All routes begin and end at the Wysor Street Depot in downtown Muncie. On-site registration starts at 7 am. Registration for the ride is $20 and forms can be found online at http://www.greatgreenwaytour.org/

Engineering Firm to Expand Its Headquarters, Development Center in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - High-tech equipment designer Jarrett Engineering announced on Friday, July 28, it will expand its headquarters and engineering center here, creating nearly 40 new jobs by 2012.

The company, which designs advanced manufacturing equipment and processes for manufacturers in the automotive, aerospace and pharmaceuticals industries, will invest more than $1.3 million to expand its engineering services and headquarters into an adjacent 7,000 square-feet of existing space at its 1011 North Pennsylvania Avenue facility.

"Jarrett Engineering is creating the kinds of high-tech jobs that contribute to our economic comeback. We're glad to see the company continuing to grow and investing in Indiana," said Governor Mitch Daniels.

Founded in 1962, Jarrett Engineering currently employs 40 associates at its downtown offices and will begin hiring additional design and engineering associates this summer to accommodate an increase in demand.

"In partnering with the IEDC, and being made aware of the opportunities available through them, Jarrett Engineering can continue our support of manufacturing and advance the field of mechanical engineering and design in this area," said Gregory Day, owner of Jarrett Engineering.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Jarrett Engineering up to $165,000 in performance-based tax credits and $60,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. The City of Indianapolis will consider property tax abatement at the request of Indianapolis Economic Development Inc.

"This is another great announcement for the City of Indianapolis as we work to bring high-tech, high-paying jobs to Marion County," said Mayor Greg Ballard. "This is one more sign that Indianapolis is open for business and a great environment to create jobs."

Indiana's manufacturing industry was rated sixth in the nation and given an overall "A" grade, the highest ranking in the Midwest, according to Conexus Indiana's 2008 National Manufacturing and Logistics Report Card,. The report concluded that Indiana's manufacturing and logistics industries are "healthy vibrant and growing."

Muncie Mayor Appoints Members to Committee

MUNCIE, IN - Mayor Sharon McShurley has appointed members to the reorganization committee established when resolutions
were passed by Muncie Common Council and Delaware County Council this year. Per Indiana Code 36-1.5-4-16 ".three members shall be appointed
by the executive of each political subdivision participating in the reorganization. Not more than two of the members appointed by an executive of a political subdivision may be members of the same political party."

Gary Addison, a retired Muncie Community School teacher; James (Jim) Gooden, a long-time citizen activist who has served the Muncie community

UPDATE: 10:05 am - Several Firetrucks from different cities are lining up down State road 37 to keep the flow of water going. I added more Pics below.

Downtown Muncie Newsletter

Unknown Hinson, the King of Country & Western Troubadours, is playing a showdate at Doc's Music Hall in Downtown Muncie on Friday July 11th. This is a can't-miss show for all guitar aficionados and fans of good schlocky psychobilly fun. I saw him at a New Year's Eve gig in Kentucky, and again last Thursday at Radio Radio in Indianapolis. While his "rackerds" are pure sappy countrypolitan circa 1972, and though he insists that "rowk & roll is straight from hay-ell," that's exactly what you'll get at his showdate concerts. Hay-ell raising rowk. Wooow! [BANG] Check out the story of Unknown Hinson here, then git down to Doc's and buy your tickets to tomorrow's show! -- carey @ munciedowntown.com

Unified Group Services Celebrates New Addition and Increased Employment

ANDERSON, IN - To celebrate its expansion, Unified Group Services (UGS) hosted a Ribbon Cutting and Open House at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 23 at the East 67th Street location. Locally owned Fredericks, Inc. was the general contractor of the project which added 9,000 square feet to UGS’ existing 13,000 square foot facility.

Mayor Kris Ockomon announced, “This project represents not only a building investment of $850,000 but also fifteen new jobs with an additional 60 jobs anticipated within the next five years.” UGS is a third-party administrator that processes medical, dental, and vision claims for self-funded group healthcare plans, and presently employs 100 in the Anderson facility.

The privately owned, 12-year old company offers employee benefit plan administration to nearly 120 employer groups throughout the Midwest. President Richard L. Mousty believes personal contact, in an industry that thrives on automated attendants, is the driving force behind the company’s steady growth.

“We like to conduct modern business in an old fashioned way, with the personal touch of receptionists answering the phones, and a dedicated account manager for each client. I am personally involved in the day-to-day activities of our company and every client we have knows that they can call and personally speak to me. We believe that personal touch gives us an edge over our competition.”

Unified Group Services was ranked as the “4th Largest Indianapolis Area Employee Benefits Services Firm” in 2006, 2007 and 2008 by the Indiana Business Journal.
Brilliant 'Impromptu' rendition wins national music competition

MUNCIE, Ind. - A stellar harp performance earned Ball State University student Ashley Wells first prize in the Instrumental Division of the Glenn Miller National Music Scholarship Competition.

The judging took place June 12 in Clarinda, Iowa, the birthplace of the famed bandleader. By taking top honors, Wells, a sophomore from Houston, earned a $4,000 scholarship and was a featured performer during the coinciding Glenn Miller Festival.

Wells performed a brilliant rendition of Gabriel Fauré's "Impromptu" as part of her winning performance, recounted Elizabeth Richter, professor of harp at Ball State's School of Music.

"I'm delighted but not surprised that Ashley won the competition," she said. "She performs with exceptional virtuosity and musicality, and she worked very hard and was thoroughly prepared. I'm tremendously proud of her!"

This honor adds to an already impressive musical resume. Wells is a multiple winner of the Milligan Harp Competition in Houston in additional to being a three-time Texas All-State Orchestra winner and a four-time Texas Region 23 Orchestra winner.

At Ball State, she has earned a Ball State Presidential Scholarship and a Young Artist Award from the School of Music. She also has performed with the Harp Ensemble, the Ball State Symphony Orchestra and the Wind Ensemble. And this summer, Wells plans to attend the renowned Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee.

The Glenn Miller competition was established in 1976 and Wells is the second Ball State harp student to win first prize. Rachel Browne won in 2001.

Program Set for Symphony at Shadyside

ANDERSON, IN - The City of Anderson Department of Parks and Recreation will host the community on Sunday, June 29 at 8pm for an evening filled with the sound of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra and the sight of the city-sponsored fireworks display.

George Vinson, director of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, outlined the musical program for the evening, saying, “The music chosen for the evening includes both popular and patriotic selections. The music will cover a spectrum spanning ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ selections from ‘Wicked’ and the ‘1812 Overture.’ There is definitely something for everyone.” ASO's principal trombonist, John Huntoon, will be featured soloist for ‘Georgia On My Mind’, written by Indiana native, Hoagy Carmichael. Veterans of all five branches of the military will be honored and invited to stand during the playing of their official song, according to ASO conductor, Rick Sowers.

In addition to the performance of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, the evening will include a raffle for a Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe (musical selection: “Leader of the Pack”) and, of course, the traditional fireworks display. Fred Reese, Superintendent of Anderson Parks and Recreation commented, “The evening will be filled with festivities, yet the most important aspect involves gathering together with friends and family, sharing the experience and pausing to remember the meaning of Independence Day with them.”

Thanks in large part to title sponsor Community Hospital Anderson, the Symphony at Shadyside is free and open to the public. Dr. Bill VanNess, president/CEO of Community Anderson, said, “We are happy to sponsor this great local event. This is a year when many citizens are expected to enjoy events close to home, and this is one of the best in the Anderson area.”

Drawing more than 4000 patrons, the Symphony at Shadyside is the top single day event for Anderson Parks and Recreation. Other events scheduled for Shadyside Park this summer include a free outdoor concert series and an outdoor movie series. Citizens are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets, as well as picnics, although there will be concessions available in the park.

The Paramount Theatre will be used as an alternative location in case of rain. Any decision to use the alternate location will be publicized on WQME, 98.7 FM.

A full listing of park events is available in the Parks and Recreation event guide, available at locations throughout the city, or by calling the Parks and Recreation Department at 648-6850. Communitywide events can be viewed at www.CityofAnderson.com

Local Students Receive NASA Awards!

MUNCIE, IN - Local students at Ball State University recently received NASA research awards for measuring Potentially Hazardous Asteroids for the Killer Asteroid Project. Dr. Dain Kavars, Professor of Physics at the University, led his class of science students that included Hannah Campbell, Ken Dempster, Caitlyn Forester, Aimee Hoffbauer, Anna Keibler, Daniel Kelley, Paige Tomfohrde and Sonia Wandenbark. In particular students Anna Keibler and Hannah Campbell measured near earth objects 2008 DG4 and 2008 AP33 for the Minor Planet Center located at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, MA.

Each of the students received NASA – Astronomical Research Institute award certificates this month for their research efforts over the school year. Students Cambell and Keibler both received awards for their unique measurements of the two near earth objects. Ball State University also received an engraved NASA award plaque that includes the lead instructor, Dr. Kavars, and each of the student names who participated in NASA’s Near Earth Object Observations Program and the Killer Asteroid Project.

The Killer Asteroid Project is a world-wide NASA program managed by the Astronomical Research Institute located at Charleston, Illinois. “The students at Ball State University downloaded our images from the Internet that were taken by powerful telescopes at our observatory that can see stars 10 million times fainter than you can see with your own eye”, stated Robert Holmes, a research scientist for NASA’s Near Earth Object Observations Program. “Students in the Killer Asteroid Project made high quality measurements of these important objects that pose a possibility of striking the earth sometime in the future. Our goal in the Killer Asteroid Project is to measure these objects for NASA’s Near Earth Object Observations program and help protect the earth from a possible future asteroid or comet impact. It is very important work when you realize only a decade ago comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 slammed into the planet Jupiter. If this comet had hit the earth instead of Jupiter it would have had devastating results and none of us would be alive today! Most importantly, we have advanced technologically to the point that mankind can alter the path of a killer asteroid if we have enough advance notice. We just have to locate the ones that are a real threat to life on earth so NASA can take steps to prevent such a catastrophe in the future.”

The Killer Asteroid Project is a worldwide NASA program managed by the Astronomical Research Institute located at Charleston, Illinois, and includes high schools, colleges and universities from China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Poland, Portugal, Russia and the United States. Students working in the Killer Asteroid Project made over 3,000 measurements of these potentially hazardous objects in the past school year. Some students also discovered new asteroids that had never been seen before in association with the Astronomical Research Institute and the International Asteroid Search Campaign (IASC) ran by Patrick Miller at Hardin-Simmons University in Texas. “Providing exciting research opportunities, making discoveries and giving students the chance to work with professional astronomers is what our science programs are all about”, stated Miller. “This year students worldwide discovered 58 new asteroids while working on the Killer Asteroid Project.”

So why get students and educators involved in searching for potentially hazardous asteroids? Most people really never realize just how often and close asteroids come to hitting the earth. On March 15, 2004, an asteroid named Apophis just missed the earth by only 24,000 miles with only 3 days warning. The approach was so close that the earth's gravity deflected the 885 foot diameter asteroid with a speed over 50,000 miles per hour. Three days warning isn’t enough time to avert a disaster by a large asteroid capable of doing very serious damage. If it were to strike a large city or if it struck land it would send enough dust into the atmosphere to make the Earth’s climate much colder for several years affecting weather patterns and causing a shortage in the world food supply. On Friday April 13th 2029 Apophis will once again pass nearer to the earth than the satellites in space that transmit our television programs. It will make yet another return on April 13th 2036 with a slim chance it could strike the earth that year.

Questions for Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley?

Last month, at MFP's sister site - Anderson Free Press - I started a monthly feature where I gather questions from the audience and take those to the Mayor to be answered on video in an interview. I just heard today that Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley is interested in doing this here at Muncie Free Press.

So, if you have a question for the Muncie Mayor, leave it here. I can't guarantee all questions will be asked, but I'll see what I can do.

Here's the video for the first one at Anderson Free Press.

Benefactors Donate Building to Teachers’ Store

Three Former Muncie Siblings Want to Help Teachers

MUNCIE, IN - The three children of Rolland E. Stephens, developer of the former Muncie Meadows shopping center in the 1950’s, have donated a building to the Back to School Teachers’ Store. The 9000 square feet building, most recently housing Bio Life, at 1318 South Madison Street, will soon be filled with classroom supplies, reading books, and teacher aids to be given free to county teachers.

   Dream Come True

The teachers’ store, now located at 1803 W. Purdue off North Wheeling in the former Ross Pharmacy building, owned by Marsh Supermarkets, will move this summer to its newly donated building. Volunteer director Jackie Johnston said, “It’s a dream come true. We always knew we were in a temporary location, but we appreciated Marsh lending it to us rent and utility free. But owning our own building will allow us to set roots and grow as an important charity in Muncie. The South Madison location puts us closer to the center of town, nearest the teachers who need us the most.”

   Like Father, Like Children

The donors are Beverly J. Stephens-Hubbell, Rolland R. Stephens, and Mark B. Stephens, all of California, but children of the late Rolland E. Stephens, a local grocer and shopping center developer. “Our father always made an effort to help hard-working families with small children by donating food from his grocery store. This is why we know he would be happy with the donation of this building to Back to School Teachers’ Store,” said Rolland Stephens, speaking for his sister and brother. All three siblings were born in Muncie, attended Royerton schools, and graduated from Indiana University. “Even though tough economic times caused our father to leave high school during the ninth grade, he encouraged each of his children to go through college,” said Stephens. Both Rolland and Mark are commercial real estate appraisers in the Los Angeles area. Beverly is active in music, dance, and theater. They live within a few miles of each other.

            Location History

The store location on Madison Street originally housed a high-producing Haag Drug Store in the early 1950s. The property was then occupied as a blood plasma collection center run by Cutter Laboratories, then Bayer Inc. and finally Bio Life, which has since opened a new location in northwest Muncie. Local commercial realtor Monte Brown and attorney Mark Ervin of Beasley & Gilkinson LLP introduced the idea of the teachers store to the Stephens family and made possible the donation.

   Current Store Still Open

Soon teachers from Muncie and Delaware County’s south side will have a shorter distance to travel to find free reading, writing, art supplies, science equipment, and classroom decorations. The Back To School Teachers’ Store takes donations from businesses and the public of items useful to teachers for their classrooms. The store is open for donations from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday through Thursday at the current location at 1803 W. Purdue Avenue. Cash donations and volunteers are needed for the upcoming move and on a regular basis during store shopping hours. Call 765-381-3625 for more information.

The show runs April 1 through April 30 with an opening reception Thursday, April 3 from 5-8pm. Traditional water color techniques may be seen in the work of these advanced students, but it is the way that they push the boundaries that stands out and makes this such an exciting collection of work. The ages old medium of encaustic can trace its roots back to ancient Greece where it was used in decorative painting on mummy cases. Carson, associate register for policy and international affairs at the U.S. Copyright Office, assists the register of copyrights in advising Congress and executive branch agencies on domestic and international copyright policy matters.

· Dwayne Buttler, professor and first Evelyn J. Schneider Endowed Chair for Scholarly Communication at the University of Louisville, University Libraries

· Michelle Cooper, attorney in the Education Law Group at Bose McKinney & Evans LLP

· Kenneth Crews, director of the Copyright Advisory Office, Columbia University

· James Williams, attorney at DeFur Voran LLP.

Ball State has the only annual copyright conference in the Midwest.

The conference's sponsors include Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, DeFur Voran LLP, Paws Inc. and the Muncie Visitors Bureau, as well as Ball State's Digital Policy Institute, Office of University Advancement and J-Ideas.
