Making Sense: Obama Implodes

By Michael Reagan

Once
upon a time it was inevitable that Hillary Clinton would be the 2008
Democratic presidential nominee. It didn’t work out that way.

A few weeks ago, it seemed inevitable that Barack Obama would win the presidency handily. It isn’t working out that way.

A few weeks ago, it seemed inevitable that John McCain was in for a drubbing. It hasn’t worked out that way.

In
political campaigns things can always change, of course, but as of now
it appears that John McCain is headed for the White House. That’s not
inevitable, but at the moment it looks as if he’s headed for the
winner’s circle, thanks largely to his choice of a running mate who has
electrified most of the electorate.

The Obama campaign’s stunned
reaction to this totally unexpected development has been at first to
ridicule McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin, then to underestimate the
effect she was having on the McCain campaign, and now to go all-out in
attacking her.

Obama’s reaction to this sudden turn in his
fortunes has been nothing less that sheer and visible disorientation.
It’s obvious that he simply doesn’t know which way to turn, and his
confusion has led him to launch a sleazy campaign to destroy Gov.
Palin’s reputation -- no matter what it takes -- before she destroys
his presidential hopes.

A prime symptom of his disorientation
was the ill-advised comment about putting lipstick on a pig. The old
self-confident, sure-footed Barack Obama, safe in the cocoon woven
about him by a worshipful media, would have understood the consequences
of making such a remark and the almost certain probability that it
would be a boomerang that would smite him on its return trip, and would
have thus avoided it.

This disaster, however, is nothing
compared to the catastrophe that is waiting in the wings as a result of
his scorched-earth attack on Sarah Palin. Unable to grasp the obvious
fact that the media’s ongoing effort to slander Palin is backfiring, he
has allowed his campaign to dispatch an army of lawyers and private
investigators to Alaska to dig for dirt in Palin’s backyard.

Obama
must understand that Gov. Palin, with a favorability rating in excess
of 80 percent, is unpopular among the old-boy’s network she has
uprooted, and has easily fended off their attempts to damage her
reputation.

Turning to these malcontents for ammunition, when
their arsenal of anti-Palin weapons has proved worthless, is a massive
waste of effort that is certain to backfire again. They haven’t made a
dent in her popularity.

Nor will Obama’s scandal mongers. Try as
they may to make a mountain over the so-called “troopergate” molehill,
for example, they will have a hard time explaining why it would be
wrong to want to see a four-times married and divorced law enforcement
officer kept on the job when he had tasered his 11-year-old stepson,
illegally shot a moose, drank beer in his patrol car on one occasion,
and told others his father-in-law would "eat a f'ing lead bullet" if he
helped his daughter get an attorney for the divorce.

According
to the Anchorage Daily News: "Col. Julia Grimes, then head of Alaska
State Troopers, wrote in March 1, 2006, ‘The record clearly indicates a
serious and concentrated pattern of unacceptable and at times, illegal
activity occurring over a lengthy period, which establishes a course of
conduct totally at odds with the ethics of our profession.’"

She warned that if he messed up again, he'd be fired.

"This
discipline is meant to be a last chance to take corrective action,"
Grimes wrote. "You are hereby given notice that any further occurrences
of these types of behaviors or incidents will not be tolerated and will
result in your termination."

This is the man the media and the
Obama gumshoes want to pillory Sarah Palin for wanting to have stripped
of his badge and gun, and portray him as a victim of heartless Sarah.

Talk about panic.
Making Sense: A Gathering of Clowns, Acrobats, and Con Men

By Michael Reagan

You’d
never know it from the media’s Obama worshipers covering it, but this
week’s Democratic National Convention was a three-ring circus complete
with an assortment of sword swallowers, clowns and magicians.

It
was the magicians who took the center ring and proceeded to convert
their publicly expressed doubts about Barack Obama into ringing
endorsements of his alleged fitness to be this nation’s chief executive
and commander in chief.

That’s an amazing feat of legerdemain,
especially if the woman in the wizard’s cap is Hillary Rodham Clinton,
who up to now has solemnly assured us that Barack Obama is not even
remotely equipped to be president.

Targeting his failure to vote
on key abortion measures she quipped, "A president can't vote
'present.' A president can't pick and choose which challenges he or she
will face.”

Now, with a wave of her magic wand, Obama’s
unfitness to occupy the White House (which she and her husband are
still convinced is theirs) is suddenly transformed. He is now uniquely
qualified for a presidency she had warned us he was utterly unfit to
occupy.

Too bad. She was right the first time, but that was before she joined the circus in Denver.

Then,
with a blare of trumpets, Joe Biden enters the center ring and waves
his magic wand. The man he railed against as unqualified to be
president is now, he tells us, the very man for the job. The same man,
he recently insisted, has no business running for president.

Said
Joe before he became a magician (and Barack’s running mate): "I think
he can be ready, but right now I don't believe he is. The presidency is
not something that lends itself to on-the-job training."

Obviously, Joe wants us to believe Obama has taken a crash course in presidential fitness and passed with flying colors.

Next
comes Bill Clinton the sword swallower, who wants us to swallow the
whopper of his belief in Obama's presidential fitness, as he all but
worships at the altar of Obamamessiah -- the same Obama about whom just
a day or two earlier Bill Clinton had suggested was not the man for the
job, the same Obama he regularly pilloried while campaigning for his
wife.

In a stem-winding speech he pulled out all the stops in
trying to convince us that Obama is fit to take the office of president
and solve all problems great and small. He pledged he’d go all-out to
help Obama, but he never quite got around to saying that he’d vote for
him in November.

And of course they sent in the clowns. What
circus would be complete without them? There was the parade of
sad-faced clowns -- the losers, featuring John Kerry and Jimmy Carter,
and even Mike Dukakis. Al Gore couldn’t make it -- he was too busy
waving his magic wand to save the planet from a non-existent threat.

Among
the happy-faced clowns were Nancy Pelosi and her Senate counterpart
Harry Reid, taking time out from the sideshow on Capitol Hill where
they have presided over that comic skit called the 110th Congress,
which came into the Capitol tent waving promises that were never kept.

Watching
this spectacle may have been fun, as long as nobody took it seriously.
Now they’re taking the show on the road. We’ll see how it plays in
Peoria.
Brian Howey: Evan Bayh’s surreal odyssey

By Brian Howey

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – It was the
strangest thing. Evan Bayh could be sitting inside his house, peer into his
computer screen, and see the front of his home. Or he could go jogging, and
watch it on ABC News, where he could also hear news of Susan Bayh’s new hairdo.

Such is the life of a
veepstakes finalist. “It was surreal at times, watching the front of your house
on TV in real time,” Sen. Bayh said of the live coverage last Friday on CNN. “And
then the last day, one of the networks literally had someone following me
around in a car. The last couple of weeks were a bit of an emotional roller
coaster. I knew we were under serious consideration, I knew it was a small
group. I knew it was less than
50/50 but still a decent chance. So we were following the process just like
everyone else.”

Could Bayh have eluded the
news media by sneaking out through the bathroom window? “Not the way our house
is constructed,” he said. “Well, I guess I could have scaled the fence and run
through the neighbor’s yard. But, I have might have impaled myself.”

It was last Thursday
afternoon that Bayh finally got the phone call from Barack Obama saying he
would not ascend to the vice presidency. An office in the West Wing of the
White House has been a goal of the senator for two decades. The fact that he
ended up on the short list for the third time since 2000 was unexpected. He had
ardently backed Hillary Clinton in the Indiana primary, helping her eke out a
razor-thin margin.

That caught the attention
of Obama and his campaign brain trust. The campaign is piling resources into
our state and by early July, they called Bayh. “I had no expectation of being considered because I was a
strong supporter of Hillary Clinton,” Bayh said. “And then he was kind enough
to call me and said, ‘Look, we're going to cast a wide net.’”

“He said he would be
honored if I would be willing to go through the process of being considered,” Bayh
said of his conversation with Obama.

Obama told him that only a
handful would merit serious consideration and “I think you're one of them.”

“To get to the final two or
three obviously you've got to have some pretty good things that recommend you
or you don't get there. And obviously you can't have too many negative things
otherwise you don't get there,” Bayh said.

Fueling the speculation
were his campaign events with Obama at Purdue on July 16 and his swing through
Elkhart and Portage in early August.
“They wanted to come to Indiana,” Bayh said. “And, by the way, all the
talk about them not being serious in Indiana, well, that's not true. They're
serious about it, even now. And that's good. So he came here to campaign, they
wanted to focus on national security and Sam Nunn and I were strong voices on
national security.”

And Elkhart? “The Elkhart
thing that everybody got all excited about, it was really just a campaign
event, there and Portage,” Bayh explained. “And on the bus between the two we
spent a lot of good quality time, but we did not discuss one word about the
vice presidential situation. We talked about kids and we talked about sports, which
should tell you he's a pretty regular person.”

So, why didn’t Bayh get
Obama’s nod?

It might have come down to
the Russian tanks rolling into Georgia. The Cold War ended with the first
President Bush, and it has been revived under the second President Bush with
talk of bringing Ukraine (and half its Russian population) and fractured
Georgia into NATO. This would be as provocative as the Russians adding new
military bases in Cuba or Venezuela.
Sen. Joe Biden, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,
has the expertise and gravitas when it comes to dealing with an increasingly
unstable world.

“When you get to that point
it just becomes what the particular dynamics of the campaign happen to be,”
Bayh said. “So I'm pretty philosophical about it.”

Or as Washington media
consultant Chris Sautter observed, it probably came down to whether Obama
needed a state (Bayh’s Indiana) or stature.

As for the fall election,
recent polls show John McCain ahead in Indiana by 6 percent. When Obama called
Bayh with the disappointing news, the junior senator replied with good news. “I
told him I would do everything to help him out when it comes to campaigning in
Indiana.”

A few minutes after we
talked, Bayh called back. “What matters are the people of the country and
Indiana. That's why I'm supporting Barack Obama. I was asked this morning by
the Indiana delegation if I was disappointed. Well, I am disappointed, but it's
not for the political reasons. I am disappointed in costs of health care. I'm
disappointed with the war in Iraq and the state of the economy. I'm really
going to be disappointed if we don't do what we can to change that.”

Second Harvest Column: Hillary Clinton at the Wigwam

By Lois Rockhill

I have not committed to a
candidate for U.S. president. That did not stop me from standing in the
long line to get into the Anderson Wigwam to see Hillary Clinton. The
line itself was inspirational. So many young people. So many women.
“Pantsuits are Awesome,” read a sign in the crowd.

I took my grandson Nathan. I wanted him
to know that the little girls in his kindergarten class could grow up
to be president. He knew about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. I
wanted him to know that a Hillary had the same opportunity. I told him
about Barack Obama and said that children of color could be president
when they grew up. I mentioned that John McCain was a candidate. Little
white boys could grow up to be president too.

Being one in a crowd of 6,000, with time
on my hands once Nathan stopped wiggling and before Hillary appeared,
gave me opportunity to think about this cross section of our community.
True that most were there because they agreed with party politics, it
was also true that many differences were represented.

There wasn’t any way Hillary or any
other candidate could speak to all the concerns we had. Jobs,
education, bureaucracy issues, poverty, taxes — the list was unending.
But we waited with interest to hear what it was she would promise. We
waited and cheered her words of hope.

You might think it a stretch to compare
that experience with the one I had on Saturday. I stood outside the Pay
Less Super Market at Cross Street to remind shoppers that We Can Care.
It was the day the Madison County Highway Department picked to do their
part in the countywide food drive. The event was to help Second Harvest
Food Bank stock the shelves of area pantries. I was there on that very
cold day to support the effort.

The similarity was in the cross section
of the community. True, people came for food, not politics. But they
too responded to promises and hope. We promised to feed their neighbors
in need and, with their help, to serve up hope with that food. We
brought to their attention the fact that as a community, we can care
for our own.

Not everyone needed reminded. Along with
highway department employees Ivan and Gerrald and Zachary’s grandpa, we
had volunteers from the Chesterfield Community Food Pantry and House of
Hope at our location. I had people stop to stuff money in our Prairie
Farms milk jug who worked at other human service agencies. We had
people sign their names on the big green snow plow who have been
longtime donors to Second Harvest and others who simply wanted to be
known as people who care.

Every donation, food or funds, was
heartfelt. Some gave out of their abundance and others sacrificially. A
woman living in a shelter with her children dropped a box of treats
into the collection box. A man stuffed a dollar in the jug. After he
left I heard he was unemployed. His comment was that someone might need
it worse than he.

On this sunny afternoon with the rhubarb
and daffodils pushing through the warming sod, I am grateful for hope.
I saw it last week in a crowd of people, eyes bright in anticipation of
political promise. I saw it again in the response from shoppers who
cared enough to take a positive action for neighbors in need of a
helping hand. It was how that hope expressed by individuals became a
community effort that was so powerful. It was clear to me that together
we have tremendous impact for good.

Hillary Clinton Visit at the Wigwam

By CelticFan

I arrived at the wigwam parking lot
around 9am. There werent too many people there at that time, except for
law enforcement of course. I sat in my car for about 40 minutes before
i decided to go and stand in line. I started to see quite a few people
make their way towards the entrance on the 12th street side of the
building so I figured I better get in line before it really
got crowded.

I was in line with a few highschool students (some from AHS, one from
Frankton) that were coming to the speech for extra credit, or so they
said. They didnt have any political affiliations from how they talked.
They just thought it would be a good experience to see someone of her
magnitude, I agreed with that. Although I didnt plan on voting for Hillary, I wanted to see her in person because it's more or less a once in a
lifetime chance to see who could end up being the next president of the
United States.

As we were standing in line, we noticed people on the roof of the
building, as well as secret service agents walking up and down the
street where the line was going to the entrance. I assumed they were
checking for any suspicous looking persons. We also saw several bomb
sniffing dogs checking all of the cars parked on the street. They
blocked off traffic on 12th street after about 1 1/2 hours excepty for
foot traffic. One individual parked in the alley off of the 12th street
only to have his truck towed about 20 minutes later. That had to ruin
his day. Of course he should have known better to park where he did.

When they started letting us in at around 1:45 pm, I was relieved after
standing in line for nearly 4 hours. We went through a metal detector
before being allowed into the building and had to take out everything in
your pockets except for wallets and other similar items. It took about
2 minutes to get through the security check. I believe people from the
TSA were doing the checks on everyone.

After getting through the security check, they seated us in the lower
portion of the gym. I was one of the first 200 or so to get into the
bleachers. There were tons and tons of media there. WTHR Channel 12,
RTV channel 6, Wish tv channel 8 and Fox 59. I recognized one of the
reporters from WTHR, Chris Proffit. Didnt recognize anyone else
though.

Several prominent political figures were present at the speech.
Former governor Joe Kernan, newly elected congressman Andre Carson and
Former Governor Evan Bayh. Before we got inside i was greeted by Mayor
Ockomon with a handshake. Its nice to see that people remember you even
after they take office. We sat there in anticipation for Hillary's
arrival. And were brought out of our seats several times for nothing
other than people mistaking someone for Hillary. After about the 5th or
6th time i didnt get out of my seat. Thats until she finally arrived at
around 4:45, about an our or so late. But they advised us that she
could end up being late beforehand so we werent suprised.

She arrived to a thunderous applause, with Evan Bayh at her side and
Mayor Ockomon standing close by. A lot of hints were dropped that Evan
Bayh would be her running mate. Although she didnt come out and say he
would be, she said "I have a high opinion of him." That drew another
huge applause.

She talked about universal healthcare and the economy. She talked
about how reckless the cureent administration has been with tax
dollars, and pledged to be more responsible when spending tax
dollars. She said she would stand up to the special interest groups and
China, saying she would pressure them into leveling the playing field
as far as tarde goes, which drew another big applause.

Were all of her words just that, words? Who knows, but I have a
slightly higher opinion of her than I did before. And if she wins the
nomination and picks Bayh as her running mate, I might end up voting for
her becuase I just dont believe we can afford another presdient that
spends like the current one does.

Overall it was a good experience and I'm glad I took the time to see her speak. It was well worth the wait.

Can Hillary or Obama Win?

By Floyd and Mary Beth Brown

Much of the current analysis of the
presidential campaign battle is missing the point. All of the media
attention is focused on the Hillary Clinton vs. Barack Obama
heavyweight fight as if it will decide the election. But it seems
observers in Washington, D.C. haven't yet sensed the undercurrent
running in the country, which for the first time in four years has
turned and is running the Republican's direction. The election map is
changing. And with the changes, it will offer a totally new
red/blue-state picture when the dust clears next November.

A
brand new poll commissioned by the National Campaign Fund shows that
McCain can win California. The findings show, if Barack Obama is the
nominee, he is in trouble on two issues in California. For Hillary
Clinton, one issue in particular poses a problem for her in that
state. First, the poll, which was written by Adam Geller of the
respected National Research Inc., shows that both Barack Obama and
Hillary Clinton are stuck under the magic 50% mark against John
McCain in California.

The poll concludes: "when voters
learn of Obama's support of licenses to illegal aliens, they become
far less likely to support him. They are also far less likely to
support Obama when they learn of his support for more spending, to be
funded by higher taxes." McCain puts California in play for
Republicans for the first time since 1988, or 20 years.

Hillary,
likewise, has a big problem in California. As a state with a large
retired population, "when voters learn the details of Clinton's
failed health care proposal -- which she has tried to resurrect --
they become far less likely to support her. These messages are
especially effective among swing voters," Gellar's poll
says.

The incessant fighting amongst Democrats is beginning to
take its toll: "Democrats are showing the signs of split due to
the contentious primary between Clinton and Obama. McCain is
benefiting, receiving a decent number of votes from Obama favorables
versus Hillary, and from Hillary favorables versus Obama," the
Gellar poll shows.

Hillary won the Democratic primary in
California and in Texas relying heavily on Hispanic voters. These
voters are much friendlier to McCain than Obama. McCain has
traditionally done well with Hispanic voters in Arizona, his home
state. Hillary Clinton's Texas victory has even been called by one
political pundit the "triumph of the red necks and Hispanics
over the inner city blacks that have come to dominate Democratic
primaries."

In addition to California, New Jersey,
Oregon, Washington and Connecticut look like blue states that could
easily shift to the maverick westerner McCain.

Another
undercurrent that is running against any Democratic candidate is the
electorate's perception of Iraq. According to a survey by the
nonpartisan Pew Research Center: "Public views of the military
effort in Iraq have become more positive. The results suggest that,
barring another reversal, Democrats' ability to use the war as a
political weapon could be somewhat curtailed, particularly when the
general election campaign begins."

McCain is unique in
that he criticized President Bush's strategy when it wasn't working,
and he advocated the surge in troops. When President Bush adopted the
McCain strategy of a surge, Iraq news turned more positive. These
opinions track more closely with the views of a majority of
Americans, and the Democrat contenders' position of immediate
withdrawal is only popular with the hard left in their party.

Finally, Hillary Clinton's attacks on Obama's experience and
foreign policy expertise are starting to take a toll. Even if Obama
wins the nomination as his delegate lead suggests, Hillary Clinton's
attacks will damage Obama for the general election and telegraph a
similar strategy that will be adopted by McCain in the fall.

The
longer this bloodletting continues in the Democratic Party, the less
likely either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama will go onto the White
House as president.
