Fall Harvest Celebration at J. Edward Roush Lake

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, IN - Autumn fun will be available on Oct. 25 for all ages at J. Edward Roush Lake, at the Little Turtle Recreation Area's main shelter house from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Several games and activities kick off the evening. A pumpkin decorating contest will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; pumpkins will be provided, but bring your own carving tools. Contest judging will be at 6:45 p.m. and prizes will be awarded at 7:15 p.m.
Enjoy friends and fellowship at the hot dog roast from 6 to 8 p.m. Hot dogs and drink provided.
Have some fun with an assortment of games and activities to be provided from 5 to 7 p.m. Candy will be awarded. Games and activities to be held include a bean bag toss, football throw, basketball shoot, ring the pumpkin, face painting, pumpkin painting, and name that bird and nut game.
Try your hand at breaking piñatas from 6:30 to 7 p.m. The "trunk-or-treat" time is from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at the Little Turtle Recreation Area's main shelter house. Don't forget to wear your costume to collect candy.
All children must be with a responsible adult. No child care is provided. Be sure to bring your family and friends to join the fun!
Admission is $3 for adults and children 2 and older.
All activities take place in Huntington County just off of S.R. 5, south of Huntington and the Roush Lake Dam in the Little Turtle Recreation Area. Call (260) 468-2165 for more information.

Scarecrow Weekend at Spring Mill State Park

Scarecrow Weekend is coming to Spring Mill State Park, Oct. 11-12.

LAWRENCE COUNTY, IN - Creepy crafts and eerie activities will offer plenty of fun during the daylight hours. Visitors are also encouraged to dress up in their favorite costume and join in the 4:30 p.m. costume parade through the campground. Costumed canines, on a leash, are also welcome. Parade participants should bring a bag of candy with them to pass out to spectators.

The Haunted Village, an annual favorite, transforms the park's Pioneer Village into a frightening place to explore from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Saturday night. The Haunted Village is not recommended for children younger than 8. Visitors are not permitted to use flashlights while in the village.

Celebrate Family History Month at the State Library

State Library hosting special Family History Month and Amercan Archives Month events in October!

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - This October, in celebration of Family History Month and American Archives Month, the Indiana State Library is hosting several family history-related events and activities. The State Library and Indiana State Archives will offer several FREE programs on a variety of family history topics, all dedicated to researching family history and exploring Indiana's cultural heritage.

"Genealogy reveals fascinating details about those who came before you, which can lead to exciting discoveries about yourself and family," said Roberta L. Brooker, Indiana State Librarian. "Whether you're an experienced genealogist or a novice, the State Library has many resources that will enrich your family history research."

On Saturday, October 25, 2008, the State Library will host Family History Day. The all-day event will feature the following workshops and activities (all times Eastern):

In addition to the five events on Family History Day, the State Library will offer five Family History Orientation Tours throughout October. About the Indiana State Library Genealogy Collection

The Genealogy Collection has developed over time to become one of the largest collections of family history information in the Midwest. The collection includes over 40,000 printed items (family histories, indexes to records, how-to books, cemetery transcriptions, family history magazines, and more) as well as microfilmed federal census records, Indiana county records, passenger lists, and military pension information. The collection includes hundreds of CDs with family history information. The emphasis of the collection is on Indiana and bordering states, as well as eastern and southern states.

There are also numerous online subscription resources that are only available within the State Library. These include: Ancestry Library, HeritageQuest, FirstSearch, and New England Ancestors.org.

Unknown Hinson, the King of Country & Western Troubadours, is playing a showdate at Doc's Music Hall in Downtown Muncie on Friday July 11th. This is a can't-miss show for all guitar aficionados and fans of good schlocky psychobilly fun. I saw him at a New Year's Eve gig in Kentucky, and again last Thursday at Radio Radio in Indianapolis. Today is the last day for the BSU orientation parent tours of Downtown Muncie. Many thanks to everyone involved at Ball State, Downtown Development and Muncie Visitor's Bureau, and extra thanks to all the downtown businesses, volunteers and tour guides who helped contribute to the success of this year's tours. In its third year, the tour program continues to be well received by the parents. Good job, everyone!

Program Set for Symphony at Shadyside

ANDERSON, IN - The City of Anderson Department of Parks and Recreation will host the community on Sunday, June 29 at 8pm for an evening filled with the sound of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra and the sight of the city-sponsored fireworks display.

George Vinson, director of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, outlined the musical program for the evening, saying, “The music chosen for the evening includes both popular and patriotic selections. The music will cover a spectrum spanning ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ selections from ‘Wicked’ and the ‘1812 Overture.’ There is definitely something for everyone.” ASO's principal trombonist, John Huntoon, will be featured soloist for ‘Georgia On My Mind’, written by Indiana native, Hoagy Carmichael. Veterans of all five branches of the military will be honored and invited to stand during the playing of their official song, according to ASO conductor, Rick Sowers.

In addition to the performance of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, the evening will include a raffle for a Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe (musical selection: “Leader of the Pack”) and, of course, the traditional fireworks display. Fred Reese, Superintendent of Anderson Parks and Recreation commented, “The evening will be filled with festivities, yet the most important aspect involves gathering together with friends and family, sharing the experience and pausing to remember the meaning of Independence Day with them.”

Thanks in large part to title sponsor Community Hospital Anderson, the Symphony at Shadyside is free and open to the public. Dr. Bill VanNess, president/CEO of Community Anderson, said, “We are happy to sponsor this great local event. This is a year when many citizens are expected to enjoy events close to home, and this is one of the best in the Anderson area.”

Drawing more than 4000 patrons, the Symphony at Shadyside is the top single day event for Anderson Parks and Recreation. Other events scheduled for Shadyside Park this summer include a free outdoor concert series and an outdoor movie series. Citizens are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets, as well as picnics, although there will be concessions available in the park.

The Paramount Theatre will be used as an alternative location in case of rain. Any decision to use the alternate location will be publicized on WQME, 98.7 FM.

Every Monday - Jazz at the Fickle Peach features Ralph Johnson on drums, Paul Rhine on double-bass and flute, and Phil Cooley on Piano. They perform every Monday night from 9 to 11.

Through May 29th - Gallery 308 presents "Four Femmes: Inner and Outer - a Watermedia Exhibit." A complementary exhibition, "New Works," spotlights ceramic work by Kim Anderson in 308's Founders Gallery. The opening reception for both exhibitions is Thursday, May 1, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., at 308 E. Join Lee's Theatre for a live stage musical production of Mark Twain's American Favorite about life on the Mississippi River. All ages will enjoy the humor, action and excitement of life in Missouri in the late 1840s to life on the Lee's Theatre Stage. All of Tom Sawyer's famous adventures are included, from the whitewashed fence incident to the trial of Injun Joe, and climaxing with the life-or-death battle with Injun Joe in the cave.
