United Way Campaign Makes Final Push

MADISON COUNTY, IN - With six weeks remaining, the United Way of Madison County reports $289,983 in pledges to date – nearly 30% of the $1 million goal announced last August.

“Many workplace campaigns are still in progress and some are just beginning,” stated Nancy Vaughan, president. “However, despite broad contact efforts by our volunteers to local businesses and individuals, pledges outside the workplace campaigns are behind where we would like to be.”

Acknowledging that the national economic climate is the likely factor in hesitation by both businesses and individuals to pledge, Vaughan encourages giving whatever is possible.

The 1st annual United Way/Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic in July raised nearly $25,000 for both organizations with a record number of participants. The auction in October, held in conjunction with Hoosier Park’s Indiana Derby –raised $10,175.

Early campaigns have also reported significant increases in giving- United Parcel Service employees saw a 20% increase in employee giving over last year. In addition, Hoosier Park Racing Casino donated $25,000 to the campaign in early June at its grand opening. The Herald Bulletin has donated advertising support to the LIVE UNITED campaign, doubled its corporate donation and has seen a 32% increase in employee giving. Community Hospital Anderson saw employee participation increase by 3% and added an online auction to the workplace campaign which generated $3,500.

New givers to the campaign will want to know that they can double the impact of their gifts because Madison County is receiving support this year from a grant through the Indiana Association of United Ways funded by Lilly Endowment. The grant will award to Madison County up to $170,000 to match new and increased donations received by December 31, 2009. The match is dollar-for-dollar for any individual or organization that increases giving, makes a new donation or pledges support to the Born Learning or CAN strategies.

“It’s important to have as many pledges in as possible by the end of November, because the board must approve a community support budget early in 2009, which will determine how much funding will be awarded to certified agencies’ programs and to the Born Learning and Community Access Network (CAN) strategies,” she said. The 2008 fall fundraising campaign totals and projections will be reported at the Tuesday, December 16 report meeting at Anderson County Club.

Donors can also take part in a “STEP-UP” opportunity, which allows individuals to pledge a three-year leadership giving commitment to the campaign. Madison Way recognition will be awarded for a donation of $350 in the first year, $650 in the second and $1,000 by the third year. Other leadership levels include Active Community Investor at $150 in year one, $300 in year two and $500 by year three. A new “Emerging Leader” giving level has been added for new donors under 40 years of age that give $50 in year one, $100 in year two and $200 by year three. A volunteer commitment is also requested of “Emerging Leaders.”

United Way of Madison County supports human services throughout Madison County, Indiana and is governed by a 24 member volunteer board of directors. Volunteers needed for this Saturday's "THE EXPERIENCE"

LIVE UNITED "The Experience" Saturday, September 6 4 - 7 p.m. Anderson University Campgrounds

The United Way of Madison County, WQME, Chick-FIL-A and Anderson University are hosting LIVE UNITED - "The Experience" for Madison County high school and college students on Saturday, September 6th from 4-7 p.m. at the Anderson University campgrounds shelter.

The event is free and open to the public. Chick-FIL-A will be served to the first 300 in attendance. The band "Sense of Reverence" will perform.

"The Experience" is part of Phase 3 of the United Way of Madison County's Facebook challenge by mobilizing volunteers to assist with OPERATION: Weatherization on November 1st.

Students will have the opportunity to earn LIVE UNITED shirts, sign up to volunteer and learn about United Way and LIVE UNITED.

A few volunteers are needed to help with the games, signing up volunteers and decorating. If interested in helping, please contact the office at 643-7493.

United Way of Madison County Kicks Off Annual Campaign Tuesday

ANDERSON, IN - The fall campaign for United Way of Madison County will officially launch Tuesday, August 26 with a luncheon for volunteers and supporters at 11:30 at the Anderson Country Club.

Mike Casuscelli, The Herald Bulletin Publisher and 2008 Campaign Chair will oversee the program that will announce the 2008 fund raising goal, unveil LIVE UNITED community snapshots and recognize volunteers who will assist with campaign calls over the next two months.

The 2008 campaign has a focus on what it means to LIVE UNITED. Participants in the kick-off will be encouraged to purchase a LIVE UNITED t-shirt and then pose in a LIVE UNITED photo booth. The photographs will be used for ad campaigns that will run in The Herald Bulletin on the days following the kick-off. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the festivities and become part of the LIVE UNITED experience.

Other team leaders for the campaign are Mike Collette, OPERATION: Weatherization chair; Mike and JoAnna Collette, Indiana Derby Eve Gala Auction co-chairs; Rod and Ava Autrey, Individual Gifts co-chairs and JoDean Washington, LIVE UNITED School Days chair. Dozens of additional volunteers make up the campaign committee teams.

Additional campaign activities include LIVE UNITED-The Experience, which will allow high school and college age students an opportunity to learn about volunteer service, while utilizing the United Way’s Facebook challenge. OPERATION: Weatherization that will send hundreds of volunteers into the community on November 1 to work on approximately 30 to 50 energy inefficient homes of the elderly and low income families; and LIVE UNITED School Days at participating schools during October. The final campaign report to the community is tentatively scheduled for December.

The Tuesday luncheon is hosted by Anderson Rotary Club and underwritten by corporate sponsorships from Community Hospital Anderson, First Merchant’s Bank, Saint John’s Health System, St.Vincent Mercy Hospital and W.R. Duncan & Son, Inc.

Madison County recieves $90,674 in FEMA-EFSP Funds

ANDERSON, IN - The United Way of Madison County has been awarded $90,674 in federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. The amount is $2,403 more than last year’s award. The award is based upon Madison County’s total number of unemployed as compared to the number of unemployed in all qualifying jurisdictions. This represents the largest distribution to Madison County since 1991.

The National Board, chaired by FEMA, consists of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities, USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, and United Way of America.

All organizations in Madison County are now invited to apply for part of these funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in Madison County. An organization need not be a certified agency of United Way of Madison County to apply for or receive this funding, but it must meet the following guidelines:

1) be a private non-voluntary non-profit or a governmental unit;

2) have a checking account (cash payments are not allowed);

3) have an accounting system in place;

4) practice non-discrimination;

5) have a Federal employer identification number (FEIN);

6) conduct an independent audit or annual review;

7) be providing services and using other agency resources in the area in which they are seeking funding;

8) to the extent practicable, involve homeless individuals and families, through employment, volunteer programs, etc., in providing emergency food and shelter services.

9) have a demonstrated track record for delivering emergency food and/or shelter programs, and,

10) if a private non-profit, have an active voluntary board.

Applications are due March 21, 2008 at noon to the United Way office located at 1201 E. 5th Street, Suite 1019 in Anderson to be considered for funding for 2008. Applicants will be notified upon receipt of their application and of an application interview time.

A Local Board of representatives from the agencies on the National Board and other persons required by federal guidelines will convene to consider all applications and make final distribution recommendations. Agencies recommended to receive funding will be notified by April 11, 2008.

United Way of Madison County and JobSource launch Operation: Weatherization for Day of Caring

ANDERSON, IN - Teaming up with a band of volunteers, a few dozen caulking guns and a heart to serve, United Way of Madison County will spend this Saturday helping dozens of Madison County residents transform their homes into energy-efficient dwellings for its annual Day of Caring. Operation: Weatherization will take teams of volunteers into local homes to tackle home energy saving projects like caulking and weather-stripping.

“Through Day of Caring we hope to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism through one-day service projects,” said Michael Collette, chairperson for Day of Caring and UWMC board member. “Volunteers will be mobilized to complete 25 to 30 home weatherization projects for the elderly in Anderson and Pendleton.”

Teams of five volunteers and one leader will spend the day weatherizing a pre-selected home. Teams will be led by contractors or individuals with vocational trade skills in project management, painting, caulking and heating and cooling, but anyone can volunteer to join a team, according to Collette.

Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday at one of two registration sites—Fifth Street Fire Station in Anderson or Pendleton Community Library—then work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at assigned homes.

“This magnificent event will mobilize approximately 125 volunteers from Madison County who will offer their time and talents to help make this a warmer winter for many elderly who do not have the capacity to complete these projects on their own,” said Collette.

United Way of Madison County Kicks Off Annual Campaign Tuesday

ANDERSON, IN - The fall campaign for United Way of Madison County will officially launch Tuesday, August 28 with a luncheon for volunteers and supporters at 11:30 at the Paramount Theatre Ballroom, Hardacre Ballroom.

Kyle DeFur, President of Saint John’s Health System, and 2007 Campaign Chair will oversee the program that will announce the 2007 fund raising goal, unveil two new community impact strategies and recognize volunteers who will assist with campaign calls over the next two months.

The 2006 Campaign, which had a $1.8 million goal, raised slightly more than $1 million. “Today, individuals have many more options for giving charitable dollars, and as the world grows smaller, the needs of the world seem to loom ever larger,” said Kyle DeFur. He added, “As we work to improve the capacity of all of our citizens to achieve and sustain self sufficiency, we will be building human resources for the future.”

Two new community impact strategies will be announced at the kick off; Community Access Network (CAN), a system that will link basic needs providers in a common database to increase access to and ease of services to the people of Madison County by adding a case management tool and; Born Learning ™, an initiative that increases active outreach and support to parents at the pre-natal to pre-kindergarten age levels through parental education and access to quality childcare programs.

Other team leaders for the campaign are Mike Casuscelli, corporate gifts chair; Mike Collette, Day of Caring chair, JoAnna Gentry Collette, Indiana Derby Eve Gala Auction chair, Steve and Mickey Lowe, Golf Classic co-chairs, Matilda Barber and Sandy Volk, Individual Gifts co-chairs and Keith Trent, Hat Days chair. Dozens of additional volunteers make up the campaign committee teams.

Additional campaign activities include the annual Golf Classic on September 28 at Meadowbrook Golf Course, a Day of Caring that will send hundreds of volunteers into the community on October 27 to work on approximately 30-50 energy inefficient homes of the elderly and low income families; and United Way Hat Days at participating Madison County schools the week of October 15-19. The final campaign report to the community is scheduled tentatively for November.
