Back-to-School Campaign reaches out to Indiana's Uninsured

INDIANA STATEHOUSE - The 7th annual Covering Kids & Families of Indiana Back to School campaign to connect low-income children, adults and families with low cost and free health care coverage will be launching soon. Partners will speak about resources available for Indiana's 131,000 uninsured children and 600,000 uninsured adults and announce the formation of the new Indiana School Health Network at a conference at the Indiana Statehouse.

Kelvin Fuller Returned to Westville Prison

WESTVILLE, IN - Kelvin Fuller, age 42 of Anderson, Indiana returned this past weekend to the custody of the Indiana Department of Correction.  Fuller escaped from the medium security section of the Westville Correctional Facility on August 1, 2007.  He was apprehended near Butte, Montana one week later on August 8, 2007 still driving a vehicle he purportedly had taken in Indiana.

Governor Daniels directs flags to be lowered to half-staff

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Governor Mitch Daniels has directed that flags throughout the state and at the State House be flown at half-staff to honor the victims of the tragedy at Fort Hood, Texas. 

This is in accordance with a proclamation issued earlier today by President Barack Obama. Flags are to remain at half-staff until sunset on November 10.

Congress Passes 20-Week Extension of Unemployment Benefits

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The federal government today enacted another extension of unemployment benefits. The legislation will provide up to 20 weeks of additional benefits to the unemployed in Indiana. This extension will result in eligible Hoosiers being able to claim up to 99 weeks of unemployment benefits.

University of Indianapolis Employee Honored

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Ned Shannon was named the 2009 Indiana Athletic Trainer of the Year for the College and University setting by the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association during their fall meeting on November 1st.  Ned currently serves as the Head Athletic Trainer and Clinical Instructor at the University of Indianapolis, a position he has held since 1993.

Frito-Lay joins IDEM's Environmental Stewardship Program

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Commissioner Thomas Easterly inducted Frito-Lay Frankfort into IDEM's Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) today.

To earn its ESP membership, Frito-Lay Frankfort is installing water meters at process points to monitor usage and maintain accuracy. They are also implementing monitoring activities and process controls to optimize water use. These changes are expected to reduce water usage by nearly 83 million gallons annually.

Hoosiers warned of fraudulent H1N1 flu remedy scams

Attorney General, State Health Department: avoid online H1N1 medicines

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Hoosier consumers are being warned about Internet retailers selling products described as H1N1 flu medicines or remedies that actually are fraudulent, unapproved or useless. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller and the Indiana State Department of Health urge Hoosier consumers to avoid such products and instead to practice good hand-washing hygiene and receive the approved H1N1 flu vaccine from local health departments or their physician.

Goodnight to Chair Indiana Association of Cities and Towns’ Legislative Committee

Kokomo, IN – Earlier this week Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight was asked to assume the role of chairman of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns’ (IACT) legislative committee.  This appointment is the second, in less than a month, to a leadership post within IACT.  During IACT’s yearly convention in early October, Goodnight was also appointed to the IACT’s executive committee.

Crash and Road Restrictions Indy Northside

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -  The Indiana State Police have cleared the scene of the crash and explosion on the north side of Indianapolis. The semi and tanker have been removed and INDOT engineers are inspecting the bridges and surrounding roadways.

Probationary Officer Arrested in Lansing, Michigan

On Monday, October 19, 2009 the Indiana State Police were notified that Probationary Officer (P.O.) Elton D. Jones, 28 of Valparaiso, IN was arrested in the Lansing, Michigan area for allegedly being involved in criminal activity. Based on this preliminary information P.O. Jones was placed on administrative leave without pay pending further developments in the active investigation of the Lansing, Michigan Police Department.

Indianapolis Woman Dies in Five vehicle Crash

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A five vehicle crash early this evening on I-65 in Indianapolis resulted in the death of an Indianapolis woman. The crash occurred at 5:45pm October 15, 2009, during rush hour traffic near the 111 MM on I-65 southbound. The resulting investigation and clean-up kept I-65 southbound closed until approximately 8:45pm.
