Evansville’s 76th Brigade Soldiers return from Iraq

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – As the snow was falling at the Indianapolis International Airport, 130 Soldiers from Battery B, 1st Battalion, 163rd Field Artillery from Evansville and Headquarters and Headquarters Company 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Indianapolis returned late Monday night from a nine-month deployment in Iraq.

The 163rd conducted 75 combat logistics patrols in northern Iraq and escorted 2,500 supply vehicles across 5,600 miles, and Headquarters Company commanded the 76th during its deployment.

“It’s great to be home,” said Cpl. Aaron Morris, who served as a truck command during the deployment. “I just did my job to make sure that I came home safe and the people under me did.”

Loved ones and friends welcomed the Soldiers who arrived at Stout Field before midnight. The families and Soldiers were tired but overwhelmed with emotion when they were able to see each other again.

“All I could think was get the bus rolling to see my wife,” said Staff Sgt. Brandon L. Boyd.

“I will adjust to cold weather but I would put up with just about anything to be home,” stated Morris.

The Soldiers left the blowing sand of Iraq to return home to the blowing of snow in Indiana, but they welcomed it just to be home again with their loved ones.

Indiana State Police Urge Motorists to Move Over and Slow Down

REDKEY, IN - During the history of the Indiana State Police, there have been seven (7) state troopers, and one (1) motor carrier enforcement officer struck and killed while working alongside Indiana roadways.

Lieutenant Mike Nichols, Commander of the Redkey District reminds drivers that Indiana law requires motorists to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped on two or four lane roadways with emergency lights flashing.

"The intent of this law is to protect the emergency and highway personnel who serve the public. Please be alert when you see emergency lights flashing and give them room to do their job safely. Violating the law can result in a fine and your license will be suspended up to 2 years if you cause damage to emergency equipment, injury or death to an emergency worker", Nichols said.

Motorists MUST change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if they can do it SAFELY, if not they must SLOW DOWN and proceed with caution. We are asking motorists NOT TO STOP in the roadway, this may cause a chain reaction rear end collision with other vehicles, but SLOW DOWN and/or MOVE OVER.

Indiana Emergency vehicles include:

Police Vehicles

Ambulances

Fire trucks and rescue equipment

Highway incident-response vehicles

Highway work vehicles

INDOT Urges Drivers to Prepare

November 16-22 is Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana

VINCENNES, Ind. - Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels has declared November 16-22 Indiana Winter Weather Preparedness Week, and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is urging all Hoosier drivers to use this week to prepare their vehicles for the season and brush up on winter driving strategies.

Winter storms can be dangerous for motorists and INDOT workers should motorists not use safe driving strategies. According to the National Weather Service, 11 of 17 winter weather related deaths occur in motor vehicles. The majority of those deaths could have been prevented if the traveler was aware of road conditions and prepared for the worst.

To promote winter driving safety, INDOT is joining several other Snow Belt states with the winter safety campaign, Ice and Snow.Take it Slow. The multi-state campaign reminds motorists that slow and cautious driving is the key to staying safe on the roads during winter weather.

"With the possibility of flurries in our near future, it is the perfect time to remind motorists to prepare for inclement weather," stated Sam Sarvis, Vincennes District Deputy Commissioner. "Drivers should slow down and allow additional space between their vehicle and those around them," stated Sarvis. "Motorists should be alert while driving near snow plows on all state and local routes."

INDOT is encouraging motorists to practice safe driving during winter storms this season. By slowing down, giving plows room to work and allowing extra time to get to your destination; we can save lives this winter on Indiana highways. Drivers should ready their vehicles for winter and review the driving tips below to prepare for a safe winter:

Knowledge: Before leaving home, find out driving conditions. Safe drivers know the weather, and their limits. If the weather is bad remember, take it slow or just don't go.

Clear: Remove any snow on your vehicle's windows, lights, brake lights and signals. Make sure you can see, and more importantly, be seen. Drive with head lights on during weather.

Inspect: Check your vehicle's tires, wiper blades, fluids, lights, belts and hoses. A breakdown is bad on a good day and dangerous on a bad-weather day.

Time: Allow additional time to reach your destination safely.

For additional winter driving tips, please visit www.winterdrivingsafety.in.gov.

Indianapolis Man Sentenced in Embezzlement Scheme

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Timothy M. Morrison, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, announced that Robert Rosenberg, 41, Indianapolis, Indiana, was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment today by U.S. District Chief Judge David F. Hamilton following his guilty plea to wire fraud. This case was the result of a investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Rosenberg was employed as a purchasing manager at a Sealed Air Corp. manufacturing facility in Indianapolis since around 2001. Sealed Air makes commercial packing materials, such as foam boards. ROSENBERG’s duties including buying routine items for the facility. He was given a corporate credit card for work-related purchases and had a discretionary limit up to $4,000 per transaction and $40,000 per month he could charge without prior approval.

Beginning around October 2003, ROSENBERG began using his corporate credit card for personal purchases. Items would be delivered to the plant and he would pick them up at the loading dock. He continued this scheme through October 2007 when the corporation identified suspicious charges attributable to Rosenberg and confronted him.

Rosenberg immediately quit his employment. Audits of all of Rosenberg’s charges on his corporate credit card attributed $613,014.27 in personal, unauthorized, charges by Rosenberg that were paid by Sealed Air.

Most of the items purchased were tied to Rosenberg as he used the credit card to fund a drag racing business of his, so many of the charges were to auto or racing equipment supply businesses. The FBI has conducted its own audit of all the records and confirmed a loss to Sealed Air of approximately $613,000.

Rosenberg had a racing business called "Chaos Drag Racing." A search warrant executed at Rosenberg's house, which had a large pole barn on the property, uncovered hundreds of thousands of dollars in car parts, which correspond to the purchases he made with the company credit card. Those items have been seized and are being stored by the FBI. The government intends to forfeit these items, and sell them and apply the proceeds to restitution.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Winfield D. Ong, who prosecuted the case for the government, Chief Judge Hamilton also imposed two years supervised release following Rosenberg's release from imprisonment. Rosenberg was ordered to make restitution in the amount of $613,014.27.

100 Indiana Guard Soldiers Return to New Indy Airport

By Staff Sgt. Jeff Lowry
Indiana National Guard

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Friends, families, dignitaries and travelers greeted 100 Soldiers of the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team as they returned from their deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008 at the Indianapolis International Airport.

"I’m so glad he’s back on American soil," said Tamara Moore about an hour before her husband, Spc. Rick Moore, arrived with the other Indiana National Guard Soldiers at the Col. H. Weir Cook terminal.

Other Soldiers' family members shared the emotional relief as they waited in anticipation.

"I know I'll be ready to cry when I see him," said Sophia Render about an hour before her brother arrived. Her brother is Spc. Jessie Miller, a force protection specialist with the brigade’s headquarters company.

For many the homecoming was a time of celebration, a time of reflection, and a time to look forward and share burdens instead of dealing with them individually.

"It's a big relief just knowing he's back as my sidekick, my partner. I don't have to be a single parent anymore," said Tamara.

One pastor who was there to support members of his congregation noted the same thing.

"Military spouses wear so many different hats while their loved ones are away," said Jeff Alexander pastor of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Greenwood, Ind. where Danielle and Sgt. 1st Class Philip Frazier of Bargersville, Ind. attend church.

The Soldiers were relieved and happy to be back among family again, too.

"It's great to be back. It's the freedom, and seeing everyone, and having all these people here; it's really nice," said Sgt. Jamie Johnson of Shelbyville, Ind. She's a telecommunications noncommissioned officer with the brigade's headquarters company.

"It's awesome to see my wife and hold her hand and get hugs from my children," said Rick Moore. The Moore's of Noblesville, Ind. are parents of four children - Joshua, 14; Micah, 11; Hannah; 10 and Daniel, 8. According to Tamara, Joshua is about seven inches taller now than when Rick left.

"I use to look down, now I have to look a bit farther up," said Rick of his five-foot, eight-inch son. Rick stated he recognized his son when Joshua tapped him on the shoulder, but it took him aback to see how much his son had grown. "Somehow I just realized it was him," he said.

While Solders missed some changes like a growth spurt of a son or the birth of a nephew, like Spc. Kayla Nier did, it was also a time of reflection for the Soldiers, and a time to take stock of their work during the nine-month deployment.

"I'm proud of my teammates and the 76th Brigade," said Miller. "We did good things over there."

According to Miller, some of those good things were route security, base security and helping with the Iraqi-Based Industrial Zone program that helps build and sustain the Iraqi economy.

"I can't help but think, in talking with Iraqis, that we are helping them," said Moore, an administration support specialist with the brigade. He also mentioned the IBIZ program. "That's a huge part of it, trying to build that base (the Iraqi economy).

The family members were also proud of the Soldiers.

"I didn't know how important our Soldiers were in Iraq until he went," said Render of her brother. "They're really sacrificing their lives, and they're so unselfish, so giving, they're just unbelievable," she said.

Now it's time for one last step in their journey. The 100 Citizen-Soldiers travelled to Camp Atterbury to complete reintegration into civilian life. They will spend up to five days undergoing complete physical health assessments as well as screening and counseling for possible post traumatic stress issues.

Then it will finally be time to reconnect with family and share their lives again at home.

INDOT Advises Motorists: Ice and Snow, Take it Slow

November 16-22 is Winter Weather Preparedness Week

GREENFIELD, IN - It's official! Now is the time to get ready for winter driving: Governor Mitch Daniels has declared November 16-22 Indiana Winter Weather Preparedness Week.

"We take this occasion to urge motorists to check tires, brakes, belts and hoses," says Brandye Hendrickson, deputy commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation Greenfield District. She adds, "It's a good idea to put blankets, packaged foods and water -some sort of winter survival kit-in your vehicle just in case."

INDOT is advising the motoring public to take time during the week to prepare vehicles for driving in snow and ice conditions and to brush up on winter driving strategies. Those strategies include monitoring weather and driving conditions, and leaving in plenty of time. Before departing, motorists should clear windows, lights, brake lights and signals of snow-and know that the vehicle is in good operating condition. In a phrase, INDOT reminds drivers: Ice & Snow.Take It Slow.

Hendrickson adds, ".or just don't go."

Of special concern to INDOT is safety around snowplows. Drivers are cautioned to give plow trucks plenty of room to operate. Transportation officials warn: slow down, don't tailgate, pass only with extreme caution. A snowplow driver's field of vision is restricted. The driver may not see you. So keep your distance-and watch for sudden stops or turns.

Winter storms can be extremely dangerous. According to the National Weather Service, 11 of 17 winter weather related deaths occur in motor vehicles. Most of those deaths could have been prevented were travelers aware of road conditions and prepared for the worst.

For additional wintertime driving pointers, visit www.winterdrivingsafety.in.gov.

Firm to More than Double its Indianapolis Workforce

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - National debt recovery agency Premiere Credit of North America announced plans today to expand its national headquarters here, more than doubling its 250-person workforce.

The firm, which specializes in recovering unpaid government debt, plans to invest more than $4 million to expand its eastside headquarters and to locate a second operations center at a yet-to-be-announced site in Indianapolis.

"Even in tough economic times, Indiana continues to be a smart place for companies like Premiere Credit to grow. Our low cost of doing business, unmatched infrastructure and aggressive pursuit of new jobs is helping us stand out against our competition," said Governor Mitch Daniels.

Founded in 1999, Premiere Credit will begin hiring collection staff, skip tracers, team leaders and managers immediately. The company expects the project to result in the creation of more than 300 new jobs over the next several years. Recruiting for the new positions will begin immediately online at http://www.mypremierejobs.com/ and will provide outreach to military veterans as part of its recruiting efforts.

"Premiere considers itself a best-in-class provider of debt recovery services and needed to find a best-in-class community to grow," said David Hoeft, co-founder and chief executive officer of Premiere Credit of North America. "After an exhaustive search of more than 100 sites across the country, we found that community was right here in Indiana. Our past success with workforce and operational issues locally, as well as the support we received from Governor Daniels and Mayor Greg Ballard's administration, tipped an extremely difficult decision in Indianapolis' favor."

Recognized for its growth by Inc. Magazine and the Indiana Companies to Watch program, Premiere Credit of North America manages the collection of more than 700,000 accounts on behalf of clients across the nation, with values exceeding $1 billion.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Premiere Credit of North America up to $2.5 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $200,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. The city of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Economic Development, Inc. will support property tax abatement for the company before the Metropolitan Development Commission.

"Premiere Credit is a good corporate citizen in Indianapolis, and I am pleased they have chosen to grow within our community," said Mayor Greg Ballard. "As they looked at their options, it was clear that they could locate their expansion in any number of other communities. Attracting jobs to Indianapolis is my priority, so we worked hard to make sure this expansion could occur here."

The news of Premiere Credit of North America expanding in Indiana comes only days after national economic development magazine Site Selection named Indiana's business climate the fifth best in the nation. The accolade is the latest in a series of awards garnered by the Hoosier state that includes national news giant CNBC calling the state "the most improved state for business" and Chief Executive magazine naming Indiana a "best place for business".

United Way Campaign Makes Final Push

MADISON COUNTY, IN - With six weeks remaining, the United Way of Madison County reports $289,983 in pledges to date – nearly 30% of the $1 million goal announced last August.

“Many workplace campaigns are still in progress and some are just beginning,” stated Nancy Vaughan, president. “However, despite broad contact efforts by our volunteers to local businesses and individuals, pledges outside the workplace campaigns are behind where we would like to be.”

Acknowledging that the national economic climate is the likely factor in hesitation by both businesses and individuals to pledge, Vaughan encourages giving whatever is possible.

The 1st annual United Way/Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic in July raised nearly $25,000 for both organizations with a record number of participants. The auction in October, held in conjunction with Hoosier Park’s Indiana Derby –raised $10,175.

Early campaigns have also reported significant increases in giving- United Parcel Service employees saw a 20% increase in employee giving over last year. In addition, Hoosier Park Racing Casino donated $25,000 to the campaign in early June at its grand opening. The Herald Bulletin has donated advertising support to the LIVE UNITED campaign, doubled its corporate donation and has seen a 32% increase in employee giving. Community Hospital Anderson saw employee participation increase by 3% and added an online auction to the workplace campaign which generated $3,500.

New givers to the campaign will want to know that they can double the impact of their gifts because Madison County is receiving support this year from a grant through the Indiana Association of United Ways funded by Lilly Endowment. The grant will award to Madison County up to $170,000 to match new and increased donations received by December 31, 2009. The match is dollar-for-dollar for any individual or organization that increases giving, makes a new donation or pledges support to the Born Learning or CAN strategies.

“It’s important to have as many pledges in as possible by the end of November, because the board must approve a community support budget early in 2009, which will determine how much funding will be awarded to certified agencies’ programs and to the Born Learning and Community Access Network (CAN) strategies,” she said. The 2008 fall fundraising campaign totals and projections will be reported at the Tuesday, December 16 report meeting at Anderson County Club.

Donors can also take part in a “STEP-UP” opportunity, which allows individuals to pledge a three-year leadership giving commitment to the campaign. Madison Way recognition will be awarded for a donation of $350 in the first year, $650 in the second and $1,000 by the third year. Other leadership levels include Active Community Investor at $150 in year one, $300 in year two and $500 by year three. A new “Emerging Leader” giving level has been added for new donors under 40 years of age that give $50 in year one, $100 in year two and $200 by year three. A volunteer commitment is also requested of “Emerging Leaders.”

Pledges may be made directly to United Way of Madison County by calling 765-643-7493 or donate by visiting the United Way‘s web site at unitedwaymadisonco.org. United Way of Madison County supports human services throughout Madison County, Indiana and is governed by a 24 member volunteer board of directors. The organization has been a member in good standing of United Way of America since 1973.

Seventeen State Parks to Close for Deer Reductions

Similar temporary closings set for Dec. 1-2

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Selected Indiana State Parks will temporarily close to the general public for controlled deer reductions twice in the coming weeks. The reductions will take place Nov. 17-18, and Dec. 1-2. The participating parks will close the evening before (Nov. 16 and 30) each of the reductions and re-open the morning after (Nov. 19 and Dec. 3).

The parks that will be closed for both sessions include Brown County, Chain O'Lakes, Charlestown, Harmonie, Indiana Dunes, Lincoln, McCormick's Creek, Ouabache, Pokagon, Shades, Spring Mill, Summit Lake, Tippecanoe River, Turkey Run, Whitewater Memorial, Fort Harrison and Clifty Falls.

DNR biologists evaluate which parks require a reduction each year based on the recovery of vegetation that deer eat and previous hunter success at each park. The state parks are home to more than 32 state-endangered plants. The reductions help maintain browsing by deer to a level that helps ecosystems and associated vegetation recover.

"Though the parks have had much success since the first reduction in 1993, a high no-show rate of individuals drawn and over-selective hunting remain a challenge for the program," said Mike Mycroft, natural resource coordinator for the DNR Division of State Parks and Reservoirs.

All participants for the deer reductions have already been drawn from a pool of eligible applicants. Only individuals drawn last September may participate; there are no standby drawings. Details regarding 2009 state park deer reductions will be available in the 2009-10 Indiana Hunting and Trapping Guide, which will be available next summer.

Indianapolis-based Allison Transmission, Inc. receives IDEM grant

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Allison Transmission, Inc. has received a Pollution Prevention (P2) grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) for a project to eliminate the use of cyanide by installing a new metal plating process.

"Allison Transmission is pleased to receive this grant from IDEM," said Dave Parish, Vice President of Operations. "This grant shows both support and acknowledgement by the state to companies, like Allison Transmission, that are actively working to reduce hazardous waste. The replacement of the cyanide-based process with a non-cyanide alternative is consistent with our environmentally-friendly direction and practices."

Parish has already set additional goals for the company. "Allison Transmission's next milestone is to achieve a zero landfill status at all of the Indianapolis sites," he said.

IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly congratulated the company on receiving the grant. "When voluntary business actions result in improved operational practices, there will be a winning outcome every time," said Commissioner Easterly. "Allison Transmission is to be commended for their innovation and for their achievements in engaging in environmentally-friendly business operations."

The P2 grant program is administered by IDEM's Office of Pollution Prevention and Technical Assistance. The P2 program is designed to help Hoosiers prevent pollution, conserve water and energy, and reduce waste with measurable results. P2 grants are available to businesses, local governments and schools. Grants require a 50 percent match, and reduced match amounts are available for minority/women business enterprises, small businesses, members of Indiana's Environmental Stewardship Program and the Indiana CLEAN Community Challenge program.

The pre-application deadline for the next round of P2 grants is January 16, 2009. Pre-applications and more information are available by calling (800) 988-7901 or by visiting www.idem.IN.gov/5224.htm.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - According to the 2007 State Victimization Survey, 18 percent of Indiana women surveyed reported having experienced some type of sexual assault in her lifetime, and 13 percent reported having been raped. State health officials say only 12.3 percent of women who were raped reported the crime to the authorities, making sexual violence a "silent epidemic" in the state. That is why the Indiana State Department of Health is hosting 10 district forums to start a dialogue about sexual violence and get community input on how to prevent it.

The Office of Women's Health at the Indiana State Department of Health recently received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to address sexual violence as a public health issue.

"Sexual violence has been shown to cause or contribute to many physical and mental health problems," says Abby Kelly-Smith, director of the Rape Prevention and Education Program at the Indiana State Department of Health. "Not only can sexual violence result in physical injuries and disabilities, sexually transmitted infections, chronic pain, and gastrointestinal disorders, sexual assault has also been linked to eating disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and even suicide.

"In addition, both victims of sexual violence and the people who commit the crimes are more likely to have substance abuse problems and/or engage in risky sexual activity," says Kelly-Smith.

The Office of Women's Health has partnered with the Sexual Violence Primary Prevention Council to develop a state Sexual Violence Prevention Plan. The Family and Social Services Administration and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute both have representatives serving on the Council. The information learned at the 10 district sexual violence prevention forums will be used to help write that plan.

"These district forums will provide an important opportunity to hear from Indiana citizens about sexual violence," says Kelly-Smith. "The State Department of Health and the Sexual Violence Primary Prevention Council want input from the local communities on the possible causes of sexual violence as well as suggestions on strategies for preventing it."

Following is the schedule for the first nine sexual violence prevention forums (all times local). The time and location of the District 1 forum is still being organized:

ISP Warns Homeowners in Jefferson County of Daytime Burglaries

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IN - Over the past two weeks there have been at least five burglaries that have taken place in Jefferson County during daylight hours. In one incident the victim was still at home asleep upstairs when the suspect(s) made entry and stole a big screen television.

The suspects apparently approach homes and peer into windows to see if they can locate anything of value they might want to steal then return later. At approximately 1:00 a.m. Friday morning, November 7 there was a report of at least two men in the East Prong Road area of Jefferson County approaching homes to look through the windows but they were apparently scared away by barking dogs.

The suspects are possibly driving a white late model, foreign SUV or an unknown color Cadillac. It is believed the driver is a younger white female. It is also believed the burglars are dropped off in the area of the home they have targeted and the driver leaves the area and "hides" while the other suspect(s) commit the burglary. The driver is then contacted, possibly by cell phone or other electronic communication device, to return to pick up the burglar(s). ISP Detective First Sergeant Stan Tressler commented, "Obviously someone that bold could be pretty dangerous to victims that they encounter."

Residents in the Canaan area of Jefferson County and southern Ripley County are encouraged to report any suspicious activity in their area to the police. These individuals could be very dangerous so DO NOT ATTEMPT TO APPREHEND THESE INDIVIDUALS.

When leaving home residents should make sure their doors are locked. They should also pull down shades or close the curtains and drapes around their windows. It also helps to leave a radio or television on to give the "appearance" the house is occupied.

When residents are going to be out of town for an extended period of time, they should contact a neighbor to keep an eye on their property, stop mail and newspaper deliveries, and make sure the house is secure. Forming neighborhood watch programs is also encouraged.

Indiana State Police and Jefferson County Sheriff's office are working together in an effort to solve these crimes. Anyone with information should contact either the Indiana State Police at (800) 566-6704 or the Jefferson County Sheriff's office at (812) 265-2648.

IDEM to bring 5-Star Child Care program to 2008 Indiana Lead-Safe & Healthy Homes Conference

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Staff from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) will be available to answer questions about the agency's Five Star Environmental Recognition for Child Care Facilities program during the 2008 Indiana Lead-Safe and Healthy Homes Conference Nov. 5 and Nov. 6. The event will be held at the Indianapolis Marten House Hotel and Lilly Conference Center, 1801 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis.

The program recognizes child care facilities that go above and beyond requirements and demonstrate environmental stewardship. Facilities earn one, three or five stars based on their voluntary measures. IDEM assists facilities in implementing the plans and conducts site visits before granting facilities membership.

"IDEM devised a way providers could be recognized because we believe children deserve a safe place to learn and play," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "There are over 100,000 children attending day care in more than 4,000 facilities throughout the state so anything we could do to involve the facilities was a worthwhile endeavor."

An added benefit of becoming an IDEM Five Star facility is the availability of grants. Money is available which can help reduce the cost of installing items made of recycled materials, such as playground equipment, picnic tables, carpet, fences, benches and more. The state will fund up to $5,000 (subject to eligibility). A 25 percent cash match is required. Members are eligible to receive grant funding under this grant once every two years.

Additional information about IDEM's Five Star Child Care program or grant opportunities can be obtained by calling Karen Teliha, Community Environmental Health & Education coordinator, at (800) 988-7901 or by visiting www.idem.IN.gov/4180.htm.

Who: The Indiana Department of Environmental Management

Two More Emission Testing Sites Offer BMV Services

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Clean Air Car Check emission testing sites in Crown Point and Valparaiso are now officering drive-thru vehicle registration services through a partnership with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

Ron Stiver, BMV Commissioner, and officials from Envirotest, the contractor for the State's emission testing program, announced the partnership and pilot program at the Griffith testing site in September. Since starting the program, over 1,000 customers have used the one-stop emission testing and vehicle registration service at Griffith. Brian Kieffer, General Manager of Envirotest Systems, reports that customers have enthusiastically welcomed the time-saving convenience.

The Crown Point and Valparaiso sites are now offering the same drive-thru testing and registration renewal services. The testing site staff will attach license plates and stickers at the customer's request.

Stiver added that the partnership with Envirotest is the newest part of the BMV Customer Choices program that provides BMV customers alternative ways to transact BMV business. Other partnership include 269 auto dealerships, six AAA Hoosier Motor Club offices, five Old National Bank branches and the BMV2YOU mobile license branch. The enhanced BMV Web site and the new myBMV portal make any computer a virtual license branch.

The three Clean Air Car Check emission testing sites currently offering drive-thru registration renewal services are located at:

Crown Point
755 North Industrial Boulevard

Valparaiso
2503 Beech Street

Griffith
232 South Ivanhoe Court

The Clean Air Car Check stations in Gary, Hammond, Hobart and Portage are scheduled to add registration renewal services before the end of the year. For more information about BMV services at the emission testing sites, customers can call the Clean Air Car Check customer service hotline at 1-888-240-1684.

Indiana National Guard dedicates new facility

By William E. Henry
Indiana Army National Guard

GARY, IN - A ceremony was held here at the Indiana National Guard’s new Limited Army Aviation Support Facility dedicating its completion Friday, October 24, 2008. Indiana’s Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, Gov. Mitch Daniels, U.S. Senator Evan Bayh, Indiana Congressman Pete Visclosky and Gary’s mayor, Rudy Clay, were among the many distinguished guests to attend the event.

All speakers spoke about how the facility will be an asset to the state's emergency mission and adding protection to the surrounding region.

"This facility was well completed, it is mission enhancing. It'll be a major part of the capabilities now of America's finest National Guard. It is a testament to the patriotism of Hoosiers and to our commitment to each other," said Daniels.

The 56,000-square-foot $18.7 million facility will employ 22 full-time workers with three UH-60 Blackhawks and two OH-58 Kiowa helicopters. The helicopters will be ready to respond to immediate emergencies in the area rather than call in one from Shelbyville, an hour flight away.

Bayh spoke about how it took teamwork to make the facility a reality.

“America is not divided into red states and blue states, as we can see by our nation’s emblem; we are united as fifty red, white and blue states,” said Bayh.

Visclosky agreed with Bayh and praised the service and selflessness of all the Indiana National Guardsmen.

“The Guard has helped people in the state of Indiana in 70 of our 92 counties this year alone and again we need to be grateful for that,” said Visclosky.

Maj. Gen. Umbarger attributed the success of the Indiana National Guard to how Indiana has exceeded its recruiting goals for the fourth year in a row and the patriotism of the residents of the state.

“It seems only yesterday when we were together for the groundbreaking ceremony. But here we are on the rainy but happy autumn day, cutting the ribbon on one of the finest military facilities, state of the art, second to none, in the nation,” said Maj. Gen. Umbarger.

The Gary Limited Army Aviation Support Facility dedication takes place with
congressman Rep. Pete Visclosky, Mayor Rudy Clay, U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh,
Indiana Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, Gov. Mitch Daniels
and Emmy Huffman from Sen. Richard Lugar's office all cutting the ribbon
Infantry Division Honors Soldiers who Deployed

By Spc. Michael Gann
38th Infantry Division Public Affairs

SHELBYVILLE, IN - Friends, family members and community supporters gathered Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 in Shelbyville for a Freedom Salute to honor the 2-238th General Support Aviation Battalion for their service in Iraq. The Freedom Salute Campaign is one of the largest Army National Guard recognition endeavors in history. It is designed to publicly acknowledge our Army National Guard Soldiers, as well as those who have supported them during the recent military operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

“We ask a lot of our Soldiers today, along with their families, who face just as hard of challenges in keeping the family balanced and maintained while their spouses are called away to fight,” said Maj. Gen. Richard B. Moorhead, commander for the 38th Infantry Division.

“Your sons, daughter, fathers and mothers could not have accomplished the mission were it not for the support of everyone in this room. The hardships that were endured by your loved ones were minimized by your letters, phone calls and care packages,” said Capt. Aaron Fletcher, commander for Company D 2-238th GSAB.

Each Soldier was presented with awards and gifts including a commemorative coin, a framed United States flag, and two service pins. One pin was for the Soldier and the other for each Soldier’s family member.

Indiana National Guard Col. David Wood, commander of the 38th Aviation Brigade, was also given a Patriot Guard Riders flag by members attending the Freedom Salute to honor the Soldiers of the 2-238th GSAB.

Accelerate 465 Southbound Traffic Shifts Thursday

INDOT contractors wrapping up pavement striping work

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Westside motorists should stay alert for new Accelerate 465 traffic patterns that take effect before the morning rush hour on Thursday, October 30. Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to shift I-465 southbound between I-65 and I-74 toward the center median into three new lanes.

Once this traffic pattern is in place, road crews will then be able to complete remaining paving and lane striping. Contractors plan I-465 and West 38th Street lane closures between rush hours for the remainder of this week.

As one of the first segments of I-465 ever built, the eleven miles of interstate between West 56th Street and S.R. 67/Kentucky Avenue cannot handle existing traffic volumes at peak periods. Accelerate 465 is a Major Moves project that will add lanes to I-465 and reconfigure interchanges to promote the free-flow movement of traffic. This project also includes pedestrian crossings, noise barriers and other infrastructure improvements that will benefit nearby residents.

Gov. Mitch Daniels' Major Moves highway program capitalizes on Indiana's strategic location at the Crossroads of America by building a superior road infrastructure. When Major Moves is complete in 2015, nearly $12 billion in critical highway projects will have been built. This innovative plan will bring jobs to the Hoosier State and leave a legacy for Indiana to be a global leader in distribution and logistics.

Indiana State Trooper Participates In and Completes Chicago Marathon

FORT WAYNE, IN - On October 12, 2008, Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Jason R. House participated in and completed the 31st Annual Chicago Marathon which was held in Chicago, Illinois. House, a 13 year veteran of the State Police, began running seriously four years ago when he joined a running club in Fort Wayne as a way to stay in shape. This past July, he joined the newly formed running club in Bluffton called Ouabache River Runners. This group currently has approximately 25 members, of which, House's wife Lisa and their two sons, Logan (7) and Ryan (4) are members.

House had run six mini-marathons in that time and felt that the "mystique of the marathon" inspired him to start training for this year's Chicago Marathon. He began an intense 18 week training regiment for the 26.2 mile run with his ultimate goal of "not only to finish, but to do so in less than four hours". House can boast that his goal was achieved as he was the 5681st to finish out of a field of 31,348 participants, and he did so in a time of three hours, fifty-six minutes and twenty-four seconds.

House is currently assigned to the Indiana State Police post in Fort Wayne and patrols both Adams and Wells counties. He encourages anyone with an interest in joining the Ouabache River Runners to contact its president, Mac McAvoy at (260) 450-1071 or online at teamorr.ning.com.

INDOT presents $3.5 million check to Michigan City

This morning's ceremony part of U.S. 35 relinquishment agreement

MICHIGAN CITY, IN - The U.S. 35 (Michigan Boulevard) road transfer agreement was made official between the city of Michigan City and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) in a ceremony this morning at City Hall.

The relinquishment agreement provides the city will officially assume responsibility for the road between State Road 212 (S.R. 212) and U.S. 12 on Oct. 1, 2009. Until then, INDOT will maintain normal snow and maintenance operations.

"I would like to give recognition that Mayor Charles Oberlie's leadership has been central to this success," said Mike McPhillips, LaPorte District Deputy Commissioner. "Mayor Oberlie came to INDOT with an idea of redesigning Michigan Boulevard on the north end of the city. INDOT listened and determined with the mayor that a road transfer agreement was the best way for the city to accomplish their improvements."

INDOT presented $3.5 million to Michigan City at this morning's ceremony. The funds will help with future road maintenance and the city's plans to improve Michigan Boulevard from the Trail Creek Bridge to the U.S. 12 intersection. The city's planned improvements include resurface construction, raised median construction with turn lanes at appropriate intersections, landscaping at buffer areas and medians, replacement of curb and sidewalk, and storm sewer repairs and improvements.

"We are happy to stand here today as Michigan City and state officials working together for the city's residents," Mayor Oberlie said. "We will now be able to design a gateway to North Michigan City that addresses local concerns, beautifies the area and encourages further economic development."

From left, INDOT LaPorte District Deputy Commissioner Mike McPhillips, Michigan City Mayor Chuck Oberlie and State Senator Jim Arnold smile beside a $3.5 million check presented from INDOT to Michigan City this morning. During the presentation, each of them discussed how the relinquishment of U.S. 35 between State Road 212 (S.R. 212) and U.S. 12 from INDOT to the city is a result of partnership between local and state agencies.

International Display Developer to Expand Its Southern Indiana Operations

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN - Retail display designer and manufacturer idX announced plans yesterday to expand its production and distribution operations here, creating more than 150 new jobs in the next three years.

The St. Louis-headquartered company, which provides retail, hospitality and financial customers with services ranging from display development to managing the construction of new stores, will invest more than $2.7 million to expand its 420,000-square-foot facility in the southern Indiana city located just north of Louisville.

"Even in tough in economic times, Indiana continues to be a smart place for companies like idX to grow. Our low cost of doing business, unmatched infrastructure and aggressive pursuit of new jobs is helping us stand out against our competition," said Governor Mitch Daniels.

Incorporated in 1999, the development firm located a manufacturing center in Indiana in 2006 and currently employs 140 associates. The company plans to begin hiring managers, engineers, machine operators and laborers next year.

"It's gratifying to have the opportunity to expand in such challenging times, and it would not be possible without the support of Governor Daniels, the IEDC, One Southern Indiana and our terrific local workforce," said Dave Kilgore, general manager of idX in Jeffersonville.

The expansion of idX's operations brings new opportunities to the company, which has gained market share with its retail fixtures and custom millwork products. We are expanding our capacity and capabilities, positioning idX to better respond to the needs of our customers, Kilgore said.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered idX up to $950,000 in performance-based tax credits and up to $37,500 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. The city of Jeffersonville will provide the company with property tax abatement as part of the Urban Enterprise Zone at the River Ridge Commerce Center. Regional economic development group One Southern Indiana assisted the state in attracting idX's new job-creating investment.

"We are elated idX has chosen to grow here in Jeffersonville. This expansion and these new jobs are especially encouraging news in these challenging economic times," said Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan.

The expansion of idX in Jeffersonville's River Ridge Commerce Center is the fourth announcement from businesses at the site since early 2007. In August, air filter maker Clarcor Air Filtration Products announced plans to consolidate its Midwest manufacturing operations at the industrial park, creating 425 new jobs. Carl F. Booth Veneers announced plans in January to expand its exotic wood veneer manufacturing center at the site, creating 60 new jobs. In late 2007, process integration leader Connextions Inc. announced plans to locate a new customer support center at River Ridge, creating more than 750 new jobs. Once an Army ammunition plant, the 6,000-acre River Ridge Commerce Center is home to 31 businesses and four government organizations that collectively employing more than 2,000.

Greenwood Company Takes Top Prize in Venture Idol Competition

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A Greenwood company's new data storage technology earned the top prize of $10,000 today in the 2008 Indiana Venture Idol competition at the Indiana Historical Society here.

Greenwood-based Scale Computing edged out 20 challengers in the afternoon-long competition that put company executives through a series of company presentations and questions in front of a live audience of more than 200 investors and business owners that voted to select this year's winner.

"Scale Computing's technology has potential to revolutionize the market," said Nathan Feltman, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. "Scale Computing and the other contestants in today's competition offer an exciting look into the future of Indiana's continued economic growth."

Scale Computing's new enterprise storage solution, the modularSan, secured the company's first place finish today Based on cloud computing technologies, Scale's modularSAN yields an in-house enterprise-class storage system that reduces costs by 75 percent or more compared to traditional enterprise storage solutions. The innovation represents a radical shift in the way enterprise storage is handled, but maintains seamless compatibility with the existing systems that utilize storage arrays.

"This recognition is a big deal for us because it validates our efforts in developing this technology," said Jeff Ready, chief executive officer of Scale Computing. "We are hoping to do here what we could not do on the west coast. Indiana is a logistical hub with a business friendly climate and the manufacturing expertise we need to succeed."

Co-hosted by Venture Club of Indiana and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the Indiana Venture Idol competition also crowned three additional top finishers who took home a purse of $9,000.

West Lafayette-based Vasc Alert picked up a $3,000 check for "most innovative new product". Noblesville-based Indy Power won $3,000 for being named the "biggest opportunity," and West Lafayette-based Matrix-Bio picked up a $3,000 check for "let me invest now".

"The quality of the companies is impressive - a number of them could be world-changing," said Keith Krach, one of three judges for the event. "It's clear that Indiana is home to a set of world-class entrepreneurs."

Krach, a Purdue University trustee and chief executive officer of investment holdings company 3Points Inc., is no stranger to entrepreneurship. The Ernst & Young 2000 National Entrepreneur of the Year co-founded business-to-business e-commerce company Ariba Inc.

The Indiana Venture Idol competition is part of the state's third annual entrepreneurship week that began Monday. The week's events continue Wednesday as 30 entrepreneurial businesses and more than 250 Indiana college students participate in the Collegiate Entrepreneur Career Connections event at the Marriott Downtown Indianapolis.

The event, which begins at 11:30, will allow students to meet with executives of successful Indiana entrepreneurial companies and learn how to build their own company and explore career opportunities with these companies. Dr. Gary Anderson, senior advisor of national venture capital firm TL Ventures, will keynote the event.

A panel of experts will focus on how to recognize business growth opportunities, plan and measure marketing efforts, finance a business and small business legal considerations during an event Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Mansion at Oak Hill in Carmel.

A complete detailed listing of events scheduled for Indiana Entrepreneurship Week are available online at http://www.indianaentrepreneurship.com/entrepreneur_week.aspx.
